The Erfurt-Land district from 1952 to 1990
The district administration ( council of the district in GDR times ) had its seat from 1954 to 1992 in the former Kurmainzische Lieutenancy in Erfurt. Today the Thuringian State Chancellery is located in this historic building .
A 40-hour continuous rain in the Thuringian Forest led to a huge flood in 1981. The Gera reached its highest level in Elxleben. On its course there were two dam breaks between Ringleben and Gebesee. In 1984 lightning struck the church tower in Schloßvippach and damaged the tower roof considerably. On July 11, 1984, a cyclone swept over Töttelstädt for three minutes. 80 percent of all houses were damaged. The church was worst hit: the storm had lifted the church tower and thrown it away. The only motorsport club in the district at that time was founded in 1985 in Stotternheim.
In 1990, Andreas Tuch was the first freely elected district administrator in the district after the fall of the Wall .

The Thuringian Restructuring Act (ThürNGG) of August 16, 1993 regulated the re-division of Thuringia into larger districts and urban districts. The district of Erfurt was dissolved on July 1, 1994. His universal legal successor is the Sömmerda district , based in Sömmerda . The communities of Alach, Frienstedt and Ermstedt were assigned to the city of Erfurt on April 1, 1994. A large number of other municipalities in the district then followed on July 1, 1994.
