- May 20 : Karl Ludwig Sand , the murderer of the German playwright August von Kotzebue , is executed with the sword in front of the Heidelberg Gate in Mannheim. As a result, the Karlovy Vary resolutions with a tightening of the press laws, press censorship and professional bans for liberal and nationally-minded professors.
- November 20 : The American whaling ship Essex is sunk by a sperm whale . Of the 21 crew members who can save themselves on three whaling boats, five ultimately survive. Reports of the accident are mainly provided by the diaries and subsequent transcripts of First Mate Owen Chase and the cabin boy Thomas Nickerson . The incident is the historical template for the novel Moby Dick by Herman Melville .
- The Royal Society of Literature is founded in London by Thomas Burgess , who also becomes the first president. The first session takes place in a back room of Hatchard's bookshop in Piccadilly.

- March 15 : As part of the sixth single issue of his sketch book , Washington Irving's story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow , which is considered one of the first short stories in American literature , appears for the first time in New York .

- August 19 : The premiere of the melodrama Die Zauberharfe by Franz Schubert based on a text by Georg von Hofmann takes place at the Theater an der Wien near Vienna. The text of the mostly spoken knight's play or magic game is lost, so the work can no longer be performed on the stage. The overture of the magic harp is still part of the concert repertoire today.

- Heinrich Heine begins working on his tragedy Almansor (published 1823).
- Franz Grillparzer completes his trilogy The Golden Fleece , on which he has been working since 1818. It premiered on March 26th and 27th, 1821 in Vienna.
- The resulting 1732 comedy Les Originaux ou Monsieur du Cap-Vert of Voltaire appears in print.

- The Polytechnisches Journal , the first German technical journal, was founded by the Augsburg chemist and manufacturer Johann Gottfried Dingler and published by Cotta in Stuttgart. In 1931 the magazine ceased to appear after 111 years during the Great Depression.

Translations
- Karl Lachmann is the first to translate Shakespeare's sonnets into German. He leaves three poems out because of moral concerns. The volume is published by Reimer in Berlin.
- Even Dorothea Tieck translated from 1820 all the sonnets of Shakespeare. 25 sonnets are published in the journal Penelope .
