- October 26 : The play Mourning Becomes Electra ( Mourning Becomes Electra ) by Eugene O'Neill has a successful premiere at the Guild Theater on Broadway. Another 150 performances will follow.
- November 2nd : Stories from the Vienna Woods by Ödön von Horváth is premiered at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin , directed by Heinz Hilpert . Contributors include Carola Neher , Peter Lorre , Hans Moser , Paul Hörbiger and Paul Dahlke . Despite massive criticism from conservative and right-wing extremist circles, the piece is a great success.

- Kurt Gödel publishes his most important work on formally undecidable theorems of the Principia mathematica and related systems with the proof of Gödel's incompleteness theorem .

- The Swede Erik Axel Karlfeldt posthumously receives the Nobel Prize for Literature .
