- May 10 : The National Socialists burn 20,000 books by unpopular authors on Opernplatz in Berlin . Book burns also occur in 21 other German university cities . ( List of books burned in 1933 )
- October 26 : 88 writers publish a pledge of loyal allegiance to Adolf Hitler in the Vossische Zeitung . The text is also printed in other newspapers such as the Frankfurter Zeitung .

- January to September: Isaac Bashevis Singer publishes his novel Satan in Goraj in sequels in the Polish literary magazine Globus , which Singer publishes together with his friend Aaron Zeitlin.
- April: The novel Miss Lonelyhearts is published by Nathanael West .
- September: Agatha Christie publishes her 13th detective novel, Lord Edgware Dies , in which Hercule Poirot , Arthur Hastings and Inspector Japp investigate.
- September: HG Wells publishes the “post-historical” science fiction novel The Shape of Things to Come .
- October: The first volume of the tetralogy Joseph and his brothers is published by Thomas Mann with The Stories of Jaakobs .

Karl Kraus publishes his adaptation of Shakespeare's sonnets , which he wrote in response to the translation by Stefan George .

- February 17 : The first issue of News-Week appears in New York.
- December 12th : German-language exile press (1933–1945) : The exile newspaper Pariser Tageblatt appears for the first time. The editor-in-chief is Georg Bernhard , his deputy Kurt Caro . The newspaper appears daily with a length of four pages.

- June 3 : In the encyclical Dilectissima nobis , Pope Pius XI laments . the church persecution in Spain.
- December 1 : In the socio-historical and sociological work Casa-grande e senzala , German as mansion and slave hut , Gilberto Freyre founds “lusotropicalism” and conveys the idea of Brazilian “racial democracy”.
- Andrei Nikolajewitsch Kolmogorow founded the modern probability theory with his treatise Basic Concepts of the Calculus of Probability .
