German-language exile literature
- Ödön von Horváth's second novel, Jugend ohne Gott , was first published in Amsterdam. At the request of the Gestapo , the work was added to the " List of harmful and undesirable literature " in Germany in 1938 .
- Irmgard Keun publishes her first exile novel After Midnight at Querido Verlag, Amsterdam .
- The German-Jewish writer Ernst Sommer publishes the historical novel Message from Granada in Czechoslovakia .
Further German-language literature
- Hans Fallada publishes the novel Wolf among wolves . The work is expressly praised by Joseph Goebbels . Alfred Rosenberg, on the other hand, and the Rosenberg subordinate office, see Fallada very critically and forbid the book. As a result, Fallada has to switch from time-sensitive material to light entertainment literature.
- The resistance fighter Adam Kuckhoff published the novel Der Deutsche von Bayencourt, first as a serial in the Kölnische Zeitung and then as a book by Rowohlt Verlag in Berlin .
English-language literature
- Agatha Christie publishes the crime novels Dumb Witness (July 5th) and Death on the Nile (November 1st). She is also bringing out the short story collection Murder in the Mews and Other Stories on March 15th .
- September 21st : The fantasy book The Hobbit or There and Back Again ( The Hobbit ) by JRR Tolkien is published by the British publisher George Allen & Unwin .
- John Steinbeck publishes the novel Of Mice and Men . It describes the story of two migrant workers who dream of a better life and is considered a typical work of the American Dream .
- The Happy Return , CS Forester's first bookfrom the Hornblower cycle , is published.
- Zora Neale Hurston , author of the Harlem Renaissance , published the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God ( Before their eyes they saw God ). Initially, she received mostly negative reviews for the work.
- By Georgette Heyer , the novel appears to Infamous Army .
French-language literature
- The surrealist writer André Breton published the work L'Amour fou , in which he describes getting to know his wife and muse Jacqueline Lamba .
Poetry
- The fascist politician and poet Sekula Drljević wrote the text of the Montenegrin folk song Oj svijetla majska zoro ( Oh, you bright dawn in May ), today's national anthem of Montenegro .
drama
- April 2 : The play Figaro gets a divorce from Odon von Horváth as a continuation of Beaumarchais ' comedy The great day, or The Marriage of Figaro is at the Deutsches Theater premiered in Prague.
- June 5th : Luigi Pirandello's unfinished drama I giganti della montagna ( The Giants from the Mountains ) has its world premiere in Florence six months after the author's death.
- John Boynton Priestley writes the play Time and the Conways .
Comic
- April 15 : The comic book L'Île Noire ( The Black Island ) from the series Les aventures de Tintin by Hergé is published. It is the first story in the series that does not take the protagonist to exotic countries.
- The story L'oreille cassée from the series Les aventures de Tintin by Hergé , published in sequels from 1935 to 1937 , is published in Belgium as a complete volume in black and white.
- The first Lurchi booklet appears.
- The first comic with Sheena - Queen of the Jungle by Will Eisner and Jerry Iger appears in the British magazine Wags # 1 .

- Of Heinz Guderian tangible book appears Panzer - Attention! on the uses of motorized warfare.

- The Parisian satirical magazine Le Charivari , which has been published since 1832 , appears for the last time.
