- January 29th : Arthur Miller's play All my sons (English original title: All my sons ) is premiered in New York. The play, directed by Elia Kazan and starring Ed Begley , becomes the writer's first Broadway hit.
- January 29th : Thomas Mann completes his work on Doctor Faustus . The artist novel, based on the Faust myth, appears in the same year by Berman-Fischer, Stockholm and Suhrkamp, Frankfurt.
- April: Friedrich Dürrenmatt's first play It is written is premiered at the Schauspielhaus Zurich. The comedy, which is linked to the Anabaptist Empire in Münster, causes a theater scandal .
- May 22nd : The P. G. Wodehouse novel Vollmond über Blandings Castle with Lord Emsworth and Galahad Threepwood as protagonists is published for the first time in the USA .
- June 25 : Anne Frank's diary , written in Dutch, is first published in Amsterdam under the title Het Achterhuis: Dagboekbrieven van June 12, 1942 - August 1, 1944 .
- August 24th : The Edinburgh Festival opens for the first time.
- September 6th and 7th: At the invitation of Hans Werner Richter , several German authors meet in Ilse Schneider-Lengyels' house on the Bannwaldsee near Füssen . The meeting becomes the first meeting of Group 47 , the date of which it was founded on September 7, 1947.
- September 12th : John Dos Passos is involved in a traffic accident that kills his wife and as a result Dos Passos goes blind in one eye.
- November: Muriel Spark becomes editor of the Poetry Review.
- December 23 : Tennessee Williams ' play End Stop Longing is performed on Broadway. Elia Kazan directed, starring Marlon Brando and Jessica Tandy .
- The Indonesian writer Pramoedya Ananta Toer is about to begin his two-year prison sentence, to which he was sentenced by the Dutch colonial rulers for "anti-colonial thinking".
- Agatha Christie's novels Das Eulenhaus and Avenging Spirits are published in German for the first time.
