- February 20 : Antoine de Saint-Exupéry publishes the strongly autobiographical novel Pilote de guerre ( Flight to Arras ) initially in the United States under the title Flight to Arras .
- February 23 : Stefan Zweig kills himself with an overdose of veronal in his house in Petrópolis , Brazil, together with his wife Lotte . His autobiographical work Die Welt von Gestern (The World of Yesterday) is published posthumously in exile in cooperation with the publishers Hamish-Hamilton London and Bermann-Fischer Verlag AB in Stockholm. On December 7th, the Schachnovelle will be published in Buenos Aires in a limited edition of 300 pieces .
- Albert Camus publishes the existentialist- philosophical novel L'Étranger ( The Stranger ) at the Paris publishing house Gallimard . This becomes one of the most printed French novels of the 20th century. In the same year the essay Le mythe de Sisyphe ( The Myth of Sisyphos ) was published.
- The French author Jean Marcel Bruller secretly publishes the novella Le silence de la mer ( The silence of the sea ) under the pseudonym Vercors in the German-occupied Paris . It is the very first title from the underground publisher Éditions de Minuit .
- The novel The Moon Is Down ( The Moon went down ) by John Steinbeck appears.
- The American author Isaac Asimov publishes the short story Runaround in the science fiction magazine Astounding , in which he formulates the three robot laws for the first time .
- The novel The Seventh Cross ( The Seventh Cross ) by Anna Seghers is published in the United States.
- Agatha Christie publishes the detective novels The Dead in the Library , The Unfinished Portrait and The Shadow Hand .
- British children's author Enid Blyton publishes Five on a Treasure Island , the first novel in her Five Friends series.
- The children's book Poo-Poo and the Dragons is published by Cecil Scott Forester .
- Cornell Woolrich publishes the short story It Had to Be Murder . This was filmed in 1954 by Alfred Hitchcock under the title Rear Window .
- It seems that the little dancer of Izu by Yasunari Kawabata in the German translation of Oscar Benl .
