English-language literature
- Agatha Christie publishes the two crime novels Appointment with Death (May 2nd) and Hercule Poirot's Christmas (December 19th) with the main character of the private detective Hercule Poirot .
- July 16 : The Saturday Evening Post begins The Code of the Woosters ( Age needle does not rust ), another novel PG Wodehouse to Bertie Wooster and his valet Jeeves to publish as a continuation of history. The comic novel was also published in book form in the same year.
- December 17 : The American writer Eric Knight published in the Saturday Evening Post with Lassie Come Home , the first short story about the dog Lassie .
- The British Daphne du Maurier publishes her most famous novel Rebecca .
- The American Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings published the novel The Yearling ( Spring of Life ), for which she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize the following year .
- Virginia Woolf publishes the feminist essay Three Guineas ( Three Guineas ).
German-language literature
- The novel Zwei on the Grenz by Friedrich Wolf appears.
- Erich Kästner publishes the novel Georg and the Incidents .
- In the same year in which Ödön von Horváth's novel Jugend ohne Gott was translated into eight different languages, he was placed on the list of harmful and undesirable literature in Germany.

- Antonio Delfini publishes Il ricordo della Basca , a thematically linked collection of eleven stories.
- Samuel Beckett's first novel Murphy is first published in French.
Poetry
- June / September: The prisoners Jura Soyfer and Herbert Zipper write the Dachau song together with the refrain “ Arbeit macht frei ”.
- In September the gypsy romances by Federico García Lorca will be broadcast by Enrique Beck in Zurich.
drama
- January 22 : The epic play Our Town by Thornton Wilder has its premiere in the United States. In the same year the author received the Pulitzer Prize for it .
- May 21 : Fear and Misery of the Third Reich , a play by the German playwright Bertolt Brecht , is premiered in eight scenes in Paris. By June, the number of scenes Brecht designed for what he called the “Montage” rose to 27.
Comic
- April 15 : The volume L'Île Noire from the series Les aventures de Tintin by Hergé appears for the first time in Belgium.
- June: After the rejection by several publishers appear in the United States in the series Action Comics , the first Superman - comic , created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster . Superman is considered to be the first superhero in comic history .
