Andrea Pirlo (born May 19, 1979 in Flero ) is a former Italian football player and today's coach . He has been the head coach of Juventus Turin since August 2020 .
Career as a player
societies
Andrea Pirlo began his professional career in 1994 at Brescia Calcio . In 1998 he moved to Inter Milan . From there he was loaned to Reggina Calcio in 1999 . From 2000 to January 2001, the midfielder played again at Inter and was loaned back to Brescia from January 2001. In the summer of 2001, Pirlo went to AC Milan for the equivalent of 17.5 million euros . With Milan he won the Italian championship in 2004 and 2011 and the Champions League in 2003 and 2007 ; in the 2007 final he prepared a hit. In his 2014 biography "I think, so I play", Pirlo says that after the 2006 season there was almost a move to Spanish record champions Real Madrid . He was already in agreement with the club and his thoughts were in Madrid until Milan's President Adriano Galliani offered him a new five-year contract and left the salary gap open. Pirlo was allowed to register his desired salary himself.
Before the 2011/12 season, the 32-year-old Pirlo moved to Juventus Turin on a free transfer . He signed a three-year contract until June 30, 2014. He scored his first goal for Juventus on February 18, 2012 in a 3-1 win in the Serie A game against Catania Calcio . In the 2011/12 season Pirlo became a top performer and won his third Italian championship title under coach Antonio Conte . He formed the central midfield axis together with Claudio Marchisio and Arturo Vidal and with 14 assists and three hits contributed to the undefeated win of the Scudetto .
On July 6, 2015, it was announced that Andrea Pirlo would leave Juventus Turin after four seasons in which he had scored 16 goals in 119 league games for Juve and play for New York City FC in the North American Major League Soccer . This makes Pirlo the third Designated Player of New York City FC for the 2015 MLS season, alongside David Villa and Frank Lampard .
National team
Pirlo ran from 1994 and 1995 for the U-15 , U-16 and U-17 national teams of Italy, before joining the U-18 selection in the same year . For this Pirlo stood in 18 games until 1997 and scored seven goals. In March 1998, at the age of 18, Pirlo made his debut for the U-21 national team , for which he would play for the next four years. With the U-21, Pirlo was European champion at the EM 2000 and top scorer of the tournament at the same time . By 2002 Pirlo had completed a total of 46 games for the Azzurrini , making him their record holder.
In addition, Pirlo took part in the Olympic football tournaments in 2000 and 2004 . At the 2004 Olympic Games he was third with the team and thus received the bronze medal . Pirlo completed a total of nine Olympic games and scored one goal.
On September 7, 2002 Pirlo made his debut in the Italian national team and has since been a regular member of the Squadra Azzurra . His first major tournament was the 2004 European Championship in Portugal , but Italy failed in the preliminary round to Sweden and Denmark .
As a result, Pirlo became the undisputed regular player and game designer of the Azzurri . The important role he played in this became clear at the 2006 World Cup , at the end of which he won the title. Pirlo was voted “ Man of the Match ” by FIFA in three games , including the semi-final against Germany and the final against France . In the course of the tournament Pirlo scored a goal and prepared several hits, also he converted a penalty in the decisive penalty shootout of the final. In addition, Pirlo's achievements were honored with the bronze ball, the election of the third best player of the tournament behind Zinédine Zidane and his teammate Fabio Cannavaro , as well as the nomination for the 23-player all-star team of the World Cup.
Pirlo also took part in the European Championship in 2008 with Italy, but where they failed in the quarter-finals against eventual winners Spain . Pirlo was absent from this game due to a yellow card suspension, which he negotiated in the last preliminary round match against France, after he initiated the victory needed to advance with a converted penalty. In the game against Romania he was also voted “Player of the Match”.
Since Italy qualified as world champions for the Confederations Cup 2009 , Pirlo also took part in this tournament. Despite an opening win against the United States , the team retired after defeats against Egypt and Brazil after the preliminary round.
The next big tournament, the 2010 World Cup , was in the balance for a long time for Pirlo. Although he had not fully recovered from an injury, he was in the squad as coach Marcello Lippi did not want to do without him. Although a substitute had traveled to South Africa with Andrea Cossu , Pirlo remained in the Italian squad, although he even missed the first two preliminary round games. In the third game of the group stage, when Italy needed a win against Slovakia , he was substituted on when the score was 0-1, but could not prevent the later 2-3 defeat and Italy were eliminated from the bottom of the group.
In the qualifying games for the 2012 European Championship against Estonia , the Faroe Islands and Northern Ireland that followed the tournament , Pirlo led the Italians onto the field as captain , as Gianluigi Buffon, the regular captain, sustained a long-term injury in the first game of the World Cup.
At the European Championships in 2012, Pirlo again played an important role for the Italians. On the way to the final , in which Spain lost 4-0, he converted a direct free kick against Croatia in the group stage and hit England with a Panenka jack in the quarter-finals, which heralded the turnaround in this. He was voted “Man of the Match” in three games (against Croatia, England and Germany) and was elected to the 23-strong UEFA All-Star Team of the tournament. In the course of his achievements, he was, among other things, acted as "one of the best midfielders in the world".
In May 2013, at the presentation of his autobiography , Pirlo announced that he wanted to end his national team career after the 2014 World Cup to give younger players the opportunity to develop in the national team.
In the Confederations Cup 2013 that followed shortly afterwards , Pirlo reached third place with Italy after the team had to adapt again and again due to numerous injuries from game to game. He completed his 100th international match in the first group match against Mexico on June 16 , in which he scored the 1-0 with a free kick and was named player of the game.
At the 2014 World Cup , Pirlo led his team in their first game against England as captain to a 2-1 win, which became worthless due to the subsequent defeats against Costa Rica and Uruguay . In the wake of the disappointing World Cup elimination, Pirlo revised his statement about the end of his career in the national team and added that he would still be available if he was needed.
Pirlo was initially nominated again and again by Antonio Conte , but was no longer an integral part of the squad. After moving to Major League Soccer , he played three more games for Italy, his last against Malta on September 3, 2015 . A month later he was last nominated, but remained without commitment. Pirlo made a total of 116 games for Italy, scoring 13 goals.
In October 2017, Pirlo announced that he would end his active career in December of the same year.
Career as a coach
On July 30, 2020, Pirlo was introduced as the head coach of the second team (U23) of Juventus Turin . After Maurizio Sarri was dismissed at the beginning of August after losing the last 16 in the Champions League against Olympique Lyon , Pirlo succeeded him as head coach of the first team on August 8, 2020 without having trained the U23 once. Pirlo received a contract until June 30, 2022.
Style of play
His very good technique, overview and game intelligence were seen as his most prominent strengths. In addition, he often drew attention to himself, especially with free kicks, with his shot strength and precision. In the Italian national team, Pirlo usually took over all corners and free kicks. The midfielder also distinguished himself above all by being present in important games and preparing or scoring goals. Pirlo's wide and precise passes in the open space in particular always caused danger. This was also reflected in his statistics as a template provider.
Pirlo was nicknamed l'architetto ("the architect") by his teammates, while Italy's world champion coach Marcello Lippi coined the expression leader silenzioso ("silent leader").
Personal
In 2010, Pirlo took over the Pratum Coller winery in Flero near Brescia , which had previously belonged to his parents. The winery has an annual turnover of 15,000 to 20,000 bottles.
In 2013 Pirlo denied recurring reports in his autobiography Penso quindi gioco that his father's side came from a Sinti family.

Siccome il commercio e la lavorazione dei metalli rappresentano tradizionalmente il lavoro più diffuso tra i Sinti, qualcuno ha voluto fare uno più uno e dal risultato, da un due molto sporco, è nata quella serie di articoli strampalati.
