Pottawatomie County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Westmoreland .

The county is located in northeast Kansas, about 45 km to the north from Nebraska , about 100 km to the east from Missouri , and has an area of 2233 square kilometers, of which 46 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Marshall County , Nemaha County , Jackson County , Shawnee County , Wabaunsee County, and Riley County .

Pottawatomie County was formed on February 20, 1857. It was named after the Potawatomi , an Indian tribe that was mainly native to the upper reaches of the Mississippi River .

As of the 2000 census , Pottawatomie County had 18,209 people in 6,771 households and 4,929 families in Pottawatomie County. The population density was 8 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.32 percent white, 0.66 percent African American, 0.59 percent Native American, 0.32 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.60 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.50 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.26 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 6,771 households, 36.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 62.4 percent were married couples living together, 7.2 percent were single mothers, and 27.2 percent were non-families. 23.2 percent of all households were single households and 9.7 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.15.
29.5 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.7 percent between 18 and 24 years, 27.7 percent between 25 and 44 years, 21.6 percent between 45 and 64 years and 13.5 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 98.0 males. For every 100 adult women aged 18 and over there were 96.7 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 40,176 , and the median income for a family is $ 47,261. Males had a median income of $ 31,368 versus $ 23,238 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,785.
