The Scottish FA Cup was played for the 105th time in 1989/90 . The main Scottish soccer cup competition, which was directed by the Scottish Football Association, began on December 9, 1989 and ended with the final on May 12, 1990 in Glasgow's Hampden Park . The defending champion started for the second time in a row Celtic Glasgow in the competition, which prevailed against the Glasgow Rangers in the Old Firm in the previous year's final and before that against Dundee United . In this year's Scottish Cup final, Celtic and FC Aberdeen faced each other. For Aberdeen it was the 13th and for Celtic the 45th participation in the final. The Dons from Aberdeen won the cup final with a 9: 8 win on penalties and won the title for the seventh time after 1947 , 1970 , 1982 , 1983 , 1984 and 1986 . For the first time in history, the final was decided on penalties. As the winner of the contest launched FCA in the European Cup Cup Winners season review 1990/91 , reaching the quarter-finals. In addition to the FA Cup, Aberdeen FC also won the Scottish League Cup 1989/90 in the final against the champions, the Glasgow Rangers, 2-1 after extra time.
