Smith County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Smith Center .
geography
The county is located in central northern Kansas, bordering Nebraska and has an area of 2322 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. In Kansas, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Jewell County , Osborne County , Rooks County, and Phillips County .
history
The first Homestead Act , signed by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862 , was applied to the area in 1871 and had a population of 3,800 by 1875. Smith County was formed in 1872. It was named after Nathan Smith , a general of the 2nd Colorado Volunteer in the American Civil War . In 1875, three years after the county's formation, 3800 people lived here. In 1889 the population had grown to 15,000. The main industry was the cultivation of wheat. After several plagues of locusts that destroyed the entire harvest, the population began to slowly but steadily decline from 1900.

Smith County had a population of 4,536 people as of the 2000 census . 109 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 1,953 households and 1,322 families in Smith County. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.79 percent white, 0.11 percent African American, 0.24 percent Native American, 0.04 percent Asian, 0.11 percent of residents from the Pacific island region and 0.22 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.49 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.73 percent of the population.
Of the 1953 households, 25.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 60.6 percent were married couples living together, 4.7 percent were single mothers, and 32.3 percent were non-families. 30.2 percent of all households were single households and 18.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.78 people.
21.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 4.7 percent between 18 and 24 years, 22.1 percent between 25 and 44 years, 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 years and 27.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 46 years. For every 100 females there were 92.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 90.4 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 28,486 , and the median income for a family was $ 36,951. Males had a median income of $ 25,089 versus $ 18,608 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,983. 8.8 percent of families and 10.7 percent of the population are below the poverty line.
