history

80th German Derby , 1949

Regardless of the later concept of sport and its definition, the inhabitants of Hamburg and its neighboring areas at that time measured and enjoyed themselves in earlier centuries with sporting activities.

The street name Palmaille still bears witness to the field for Paille-Maille , a golf-like precision sport that was laid out there in the 17th century and has been practiced again as swing golf in Hamburg since 2010 . Winter sports joys are also documented on pictorial representations over several centuries. For example, ice skaters and other ice sports on the Alster , the Elbe and other bodies of water or tobogganing from suitable slopes, such as in Blankenese, where a traditional sledge shape has been preserved with the Kreek .

While the facilities of the - after Vienna - first German bathing ship on the Inner Alster (1793) and the first German public bathing (1855 on Schweinemarkt, only demolished in 1963) are more likely to be seen from the point of view of personal hygiene, a number of them were built in the 19th century of river bathing establishments and later indoor pools also more suitable facilities for free swimming. At the beginning of the 19th century, gymnastics was also popular in Hamburg . Fencing master Gotthard Nicolai had already introduced a gymnasium (Johannisstraße) and children's gymnastics for girls in Altona before he set up a public gymnasium (Cordsenscher Platz am Brooktor) in Hamburg in 1816. While the Johanniskloster (today Rathausmarkt ) was initially used in winter, the first gymnasium in Germany was built for the Hamburg Gymnastics Association from 1816 in 1849 (in the corner of Besenbinderhof / Brockes Allee), which was later followed by others.

During the Weimar Republic and the time of National Socialism, the three-city gymnastics Berlin-Hamburg-Leipzig was one of the most important sporting events in the Hanseatic city. It was held alternately in one of the three major cities involved, in Hamburg in particular in the Ufa-Palast and in the Civa-Varieté.

Triggered by the Anglophilia of the Hanseatic League in the 19th century , Hamburg became the gateway for English sports with their competitions. The Hamburg Ruder Club founded in 1836 (which later joined forces with the Germania Ruder Club founded in 1853) was the first in Germany. In 1843 a rowing regatta was held for the first time. The first sailing regatta was held just two years later, and members of other clubs and forerunners finally formed the well-known North German Regatta Club in 1868 . The Eimsbüttel Velociped Riding Club developed into the world's first bicycle club in 1869, which held the first races that same year. After a horse race first held on the Wandsbeker Feldern in July 1835, the North German Gallop Derby for three-year-olds was launched in 1869 by the Hamburg Racing Club from 1852 on the course built in Hamburg-Horn in 1855 . Other sports such as tennis, hockey, polo and golf followed with the establishment of further clubs and the construction of corresponding facilities. In 1896, Friedrich Traun from SC Germania won the gold medal in tennis at the first Olympic Games in 1887 , after he failed in his running discipline.

Even if a tendency towards exclusivity is evident in some of these sports to this day, sports such as football quickly became popular in large parts of the population and reached wider circles. Hamburg became one of the German strongholds of the workers' sports movement . Around 1930 there were 60 football clubs in the workers' sports cartel and 120 football clubs were members of the Hamburg Committee for Physical Education, along with other sports clubs, while in addition to the private sports facilities, the State Office for Physical Education had around 55 state sports facilities with 70 playing areas on one Area of around 94 ha.

The Millerntor Stadium in St. Pauli is also well-known as a football stadium and was gradually expanded from 2006 to 2015. What is less well known, however, is that the Billtalstadion in Bergedorf, with 30,000 seats, is the second largest stadium in Hamburg. The facility, which is rarely used today, was at times under discussion for conversion into a football stadium, which was built as the Evendi Arena in Altona in 2005. Smaller and traditional stadiums are, for example, the Hoheluft Stadium (since 1907) or the Adolf-Jäger-Kampfbahn (1909).
