The Virginia Wings were an American ice hockey franchise of the American Hockey League based in Norfolk , Virginia .

history

The franchise was founded in 1971 as Tidewater Wings . Before the 1972/73 season, the Wings were a farm team of the Detroit Red Wings and renamed Virginia Wings . After the Tidewater Wings had missed the playoffs for the Calder Cup in their first season , the Virginia Wings reached the second playoff round in the 1972/73 season, in which they were defeated by the Cincinnati Swords with 2-4 wins. After another year without a playoff participation, the Wings were in the 1974/75 season for the first and only time division winners, but were eliminated in the first playoff round with 1: 4 wins against the New Haven Nighthawks . Following this season, the Virginia Wings became inactive. After four years, the Detroit Red Wings moved the franchise to Glens Falls , New York , where it was active as Adirondack Red Wings in the AHL from 1979 to 1999 .

The gap that arose in Norfolk was subsequently replaced by the Hampton Gulls (1977-78) and the Norfolk Admirals (since 2000) from the American Hockey League , the Hampton Gulls (1974-1977) and the Tidewater Sharks (1975- 1977) from the Southern Hockey League , as well as the Hampton Road Gulls (1982-1983) from the Atlantic Coast Hockey League and the Hampton Roads Admirals (1989-2000) from the East Coast Hockey League .
