Todd County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Elkton , named after a former waterhole for elk.

The county is located in southwest Kentucky, borders the state of Tennessee to the south and has an area of 976 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers are water. In Kentucky, it is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Muhlenberg County , Logan County, and Christian County .

Todd County was formed on December 30, 1819 from parts of Christian County and Logan County. It was named after Colonel John Todd.

According to the 2000 census , Todd County's population was 11,971. 126 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 4,569 households and 3,367 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 89.32 percent white, 8.75 percent African American, 0.15 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.87 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.71 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.66 percent of the population.
Of the 4,569 households, 33.5 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 58.7 percent were married couples living together, 11.6 percent were single mothers, 26.3 percent were non-families, 23.0 percent were single households and 11.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.05.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.6 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 8.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.4 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.4 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.0 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 94.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.7 men.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 29,718 , and the median income for a family was $ 36,043. Males had a median income of $ 28,502 versus $ 20,340 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,462. 14.7 percent of families and 17.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 21.9 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 22.0 percent were people over 65 years of age.
