Arco is a town with 17,927 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) about five kilometers north of Lake Garda on the lower reaches of the Sarca River . Arco is in the province of Trento . Together with the neighboring municipality of Riva del Garda , Arco forms a contiguous settlement area with more than 30,000 inhabitants.

General

Due to its protected location surrounded by mountains ( Lake Garda mountains , foothills of the Brenta Group ) and the proximity to Lake Garda, Arco has a microclimate that z. B. favors the growth of palm trees. The city is considered a climatic health resort (Stazione di cura e soggiorno).

In the second half of the 19th century, Arco became the winter seat of the Austrian imperial court (outdated German Arch ). During this time, numerous Art Nouveau villas were built there by noble and middle-class families, including those of Archduke Albrecht , who died here in 1895. The overall structural appearance is still preserved today. The parish belonged to the Arco judicial district and was part of the Riva district until the end of the First World War .

In the city's parks, Arco has an important arboretum that also houses sequoias .

The city is populated by numerous tourists every year from spring. The largest group is made up of climbers and mountain bikers.

The city is divided into districts and factions , all of which have the names of continuous streets. Arco has an old town with many small streets, shops and bars. The focus is on Piazza 3 Novembre (3rd November Square), which is centrally located in front of the large church SM Assunta di Arco . The Trinity Church, built according to the designs of Heinrich Fricke , was the first Protestant church in what is now Trentino. The actual urban area is located centrally and in a ring around the castle hill. Around the city are numerous incorporated places (Frazione, Località). The local area therefore extends to the east and west to the adjacent mountains, to the north it is bounded by the town of Dro , to the south it even extends a little way to Lake Garda between Riva del Garda and Torbole .

Castello di Arco (Arco castle ruins)

The ruins of the medieval castle ruins of Arco stand on the castle rock above the old town. In various centuries this was the focus of disputes between parties from Verona, Tyrol, France, Bavaria and Milan. In 1495 Albrecht Dürer created a painting of the city including the still intact castle. A way of the cross leads from the castle to Monte Colodri .

Arco is on the state road SS45bis , which extends from Trento along the western shore of Lake Garda to Cremona , and on the SS240dir , a spur road from Nago of the state road SS240 from Storo to Rovereto . Rovereto-Süd is the next connection to the A 22 , the Italian Brenner motorway, which extends to Austria in the north and to Verona or Modena in the south .

Until 1936 the city was connected to the railway network by the Mori – Arco – Riva local line. The abandoned train station is now used as a central bus station (Stazione). From here you can reach the surrounding villages, including Rovereto, where the next station of the Italian state railway is, and Riva del Garda on Lake Garda, by boat.

In recent years, bypasses have been created which significantly reduce traffic in the city, especially during rush hour.

Sports

Due to its location, Arco is a popular climbing area . The mountain landscape around Arco offers sport climbing areas as well as many longer alpine tours up to 1000 m climbing length (see also: Climbing area Massone ). The Rockmaster , a climbing competition, takes place every September . From July 2nd to 10th, 2011, Arco hosted the eleventh world climbing championship .

In addition, Arco is the starting point for many visitors for mountain bike tours and mountain hikes.

On June 2, 2001, the 14th stage of the Giro d'Italia ended in Arco.
