Steffeln is a municipality in the Vulkaneifel district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Gerolstein community .

Geographical location

The place is in the Vulkaneifel . The districts of Auel and Lehnerath with the homesteads Kirchenhof, Lindenhof and Petershof as well as the residential areas Rodert, Römerhof, Steffelner Mühle and Waldfrieden belong to the municipality of Steffeln .

climate

The annual precipitation is 946 mm. The rainfall is high. They are in the upper quarter of the values recorded in Germany. Lower values are registered at 81% of the measuring stations of the German Weather Service . The driest month is April, with the most rainfall in December. In December there is 1.6 times more rainfall than in April. The rainfall varies moderately. Lower seasonal fluctuations are recorded at 65% of the measuring stations .

history

In Roman times (2nd / 3rd century) there was a manor house ( Villa rustica ) above today's village . The Romans were already removing the volcanic tuffs on the Kirchberg . Steffeln is first mentioned in a document in 943 as a stephilines owned by the Prüm Abbey . Since the 13th century under changing rule ( Lords or Counts Manderscheid-Schleiden , from 1617 the Counts of Manderscheid-Gerolstein ), the subordinate rule Steffeln belonged to the Duchy of Luxembourg for more than 300 years (until 1795). In contrast, the districts of Auel (first mentioned in 983) and Lehnerath were owned by the Counts of Manderscheid-Gerolstein .

On November 7, 1970, the previously independent municipality of Auel (then 153 inhabitants) was incorporated into Steffeln and the hamlet of Lehnerath with the courtyards Kirchenhof, Lindenhof and Petershof (together 55 inhabitants at the time) was reunified from the municipality of Basberg to Steffeln. At the same time, Steffeln was reclassified together with 14 other communities from the dissolved district of Prüm to the district of Daun (since 2007 district of Vulkaneifel).

Municipal council

The council in Steffeln consists of twelve council members, who in the local elections on May 26, 2019 in a majority vote were elected, and the volunteer local mayor as chairman.

	Justification for the coat of arms: The blue tip symbolizes the " Steffelnkopf ", which takes its name from the place. The flaming sword is the attribute of the patron saint St. Michael ; the two stars are reminiscent of the halo of St. Johannes Nepomuk , the patron saint of Auel.

Hiking routes around Steffeln

The Steffelberg volcanic cone, located approx. 1 km to the south-west, was developed into a teaching and test volcano in the 1990s after it had served as a lava quarry since the 1950s. The members of the local Eifel Association guide you through the complex as "volcano gardeners"

The Eichholzmaar , one of the ten water-filled maars in the Vulkaneifel, was renatured a few years ago. The Maarsee has an area of approx. 11,000 m². The Eichholzmaar has a maximum depth of only around 3 m. The small maar lake has developed into a refuge for rare birds in recent years. There is a bird watching station on the western bank
