Steffeln is a municipality in the Vulkaneifel district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Gerolstein community .

Geographical location

The place is in the Vulkaneifel . The districts of Auel and Lehnerath with the homesteads Kirchenhof, Lindenhof and Petershof as well as the residential areas Rodert, Römerhof, Steffelner Mühle and Waldfrieden belong to the municipality of Steffeln .

history

In Roman times (2nd / 3rd century) there was a manor house ( Villa rustica ) above today's village . The Romans were already removing the volcanic tuffs on the Kirchberg . Steffeln is first mentioned in a document in 943 as a stephilines owned by the Prüm Abbey . Since the 13th century under changing rule ( Lords or Counts Manderscheid-Schleiden , from 1617 the Counts of Manderscheid-Gerolstein ), the subordinate rule Steffeln belonged to the Duchy of Luxembourg for more than 300 years (until 1795). In contrast, the districts of Auel (first mentioned in 983) and Lehnerath were owned by the Counts of Manderscheid-Gerolstein .

On November 7, 1970, the previously independent municipality of Auel (then 153 inhabitants) was incorporated into Steffeln and the hamlet of Lehnerath with the courtyards Kirchenhof, Lindenhof and Petershof (together 55 inhabitants at the time) was reunified from the municipality of Basberg to Steffeln. At the same time, Steffeln was reclassified together with 14 other communities from the dissolved district of Prüm to the district of Daun (since 2007 district of Vulkaneifel).
