Chenay is located southwest of Poitiers in the historic Poitou countryside . Neighboring municipalities are Exoudun in the west, Avon in the northwest, Saint-Sauvant in the north, Vançais in the east, Lezay and Sepvret in the southeast and Chey in the south. In addition, Chenay owned a station on the Parthenay – Melle line of the Compagnie des Tramways des Deux-Sèvres (TDS) .
