It belongs to the arrondissement of Villefranche-sur-Saône and the canton of Le Bois-d'Oingt (until 2015: canton of Gleizé ). The inhabitants are called cognyards .

Cogny is located about 29 kilometers north-northwest of Lyon and about seven kilometers west of Villefranche-sur-Saône in the Bourgogne wine-growing region . Cogny is surrounded by the neighboring communities Rivolet in the north and north-west, Denicé in the north-east, Lacenas in the east, Jarnioux in the south and south-east, Ville-sur-Jarnioux in the south and south-west and Sainte-Paule in the west and south-west.
