River system of the Main

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The river system of the Main is structured by the low mountain ranges that run through northern southern Germany . East of the east of the range of Haßbergen , Steigerwald and Frankenhöhe (the north-western part of which, however, separates the Main Basin from the upper Altmühltal ) lies the area of the Upper Main and its source and tributaries to the north of Franconian Switzerland and the Regnitz system to the south . Both river names change here at two confluences (Regnitz from Pegnitz and Rednitz , and Rednitz from Franconian Rezat and Swabian Rezat ). This is also where the longest flow path in the Main System begins. The Itz, which flows roughly across from the Regnitz, drains part of the Thuringian Slate Mountains and the east of the Grabfeld with its tributaries .

Between the above-mentioned mountains in the east and Spessart and Odenwald in the west, a large basin of low plateaus, in which the Main has dug its valley, extends above the Mainspitze at Ochsenfurt, partly wide, at Volkach with a circular mountain , from Ochsenfurt to the breakthrough between Spessart and Odenwald hardly wider than the river. In the south of this basin, the Tauber has dug its valley, which comes from the Taubergrund , a high, flat hollow between the Frankenhöhe and Hohenloher plateau . The most important tributaries of the Tauber are the Gollach from the north side of the Frankenhöhe and the Brehmbach , which comes from the same area as the Erf , which flows further down into the Main , plus the Umpfer from the north of the building land . The triangles formed by the changes in the main direction of the Main are cross-connections, which however upriver have not in the valley connection, cut off the large Wern in the well-known Maindreieck and the smaller Aalbach between Würzburg and Wertheim - Bettingen . From the rivers that flow out at Gemünden am Main, the Franconian Saale drains the west of the grave field, the Sinn the south side of the Rhön and Land ridge .

To the west of the Spessart, the Main valley widens and merges into an eastern expansion of the Upper Rhine Rift, which is, however, subdivided here by hill ridges that run parallel to the Lower Main. In Frankfurt- Höchst opens Nidda collects the water from the after its tributary Weather named Wetterau . The Nidder , which has almost the same name, is one of its tributaries .

Representation:
  • Upstream order
  • A body of water flows into that of the river courses listed above,
the name of which begins above the indication of the confluence side ("right" / "left") of the flowing water.
  • Arrows are directed downstream and are in front of geographically upper parts of a previously mentioned river course.
  • Lengths after the slash refer to the course of the river according to the official classification in contrast to the traditional use of the
name, or to the scientifically longest flow path in contrast to the officially defined river.
  • Waters of less than 25 km by name are included if they are part of the name of a watercourse of this minimum length.
To the longest rivers: Regnitz  162 km • Franconian Saale  140 km • Tauber  131.7 km • Pegnitz  127.3 km
Nidda  89.7 km • Kinzig  86.0 km • Aisch  83 km • Itz  79.1 km • Wiesent  78 km • Wern  70, 9 km
