John Thomson Mason, Jr. (born May 9, 1815 in Montpelier near Hagerstown , Maryland , † March 28, 1873 in Elkton , Maryland) was an American lawyer and politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

Mason was tutored and then graduated from Princeton College in 1836 . He studied law , was admitted to the bar and then opened his own legal practice in Hagerstown in 1838. He also served in the Maryland Senate from 1838 to 1839 . He was then elected as a Democrat in the 27th US Congress , where he represented the 6th electoral district of Maryland. He remained there from March 4, 1841 to March 3, 1843. He later served as a judge at the Maryland Court of Appeals from 1851 to 1857 . In the same year he started as a US Collector of Customs in Baltimoreto work on, an activity he carried out until 1861. He then moved to Annapolis . He then served as Secretary of State of Maryland from 1872 until his death in 1873 .

He was buried in Rose Hill Cemetery in Hagerstown.

He was the son of John Thomson Mason (1765-1824) and Elizabeth (Beltzhoover) Mason (1781-1836), grandson of Thomas Mason , great-nephew of George Mason and nephew of Stevens Thomson Mason (1760-1803). He was also first cousin of Armistead Thomson Mason , John Thomson Mason (1787-1850), James Murray Mason , Stevens Thomson Mason (1811-1843) and second cousin of Thomson Francis Mason . On December 14, 1842, he married Margaret Augusta Cowan (1821–1899).
