List of participants in the Campeonato Brasileiro de Futebol
The following list contains all previous participants in the Campeonato Brasileiro de Futebol , the national professional league introduced in 1971 (status: current game year 2018 = 48 matches). The national association CBF only recognized the champions from the Taça Brasil and Torneio Roberto Gomes Pedrosa competitions as such in December 2010. The list presented here does not take these competitions into account. The sorting is based on the alphabetical order of the states (BS) and within the same according to the alphabetical order of the clubs.
In a few years the national soccer championship in Brazil was played in a rather peculiar way. For example, a total of 94 teams took part in the battle for the championship in 1979, which explains the 94th place of the CR Guará (DF) listed in the overview below. In addition, there were championship rounds in 1987 and 2000 due to association disputes, in which second and third division teams were allowed to participate. However, not all participants may be rated as first division clubs. The championship round, which was extended to 115 teams, was divided into four so-called modules in 2000, which are to be counted as follows for membership in the first division: the blue module with 25 teams was considered the actual first division, so that its participants are all classified as first division players for 2000. Twelve of them qualified for the round of 16 of the championship finals. The other four final round participants were determined from the yellow module ( São Caetano from SP, the Paraná Clube from PR and the Clube do Remo from PA) and from the green and white module (overall winner: Clube Malutrom from PR). These four teams are also rated as first division clubs of the year 2000.
Flamengo has traditionally been top notch, it can be assumed that the clubs Santos and Sao Paulo also always had played first class. Both clubs, together with the Corinthians São Paulo and Associação Portuguesa de Desportos, boycotted the 1979 event .
