List of name changes of political communities in Switzerland
The basic unit of the state organization in Switzerland are the political communities .
The following list only includes name changes without area changes (i.e. without new names after mergers) from 1850. For name changes resulting from territorial mergers or division of areas, see: Repealed political municipalities in Switzerland or New political municipalities in Switzerland
The compilation is based on the official municipality register of Switzerland from 1986, as well as the mutation reports No. 1 to 81 published later by the Federal Statistical Office (indication of the mutation number).
In most cases, these are adjustments that resulted either from shifts in weight after mergers or to clarify and delimit identical locations in other cantons. Even a renaming to promote tourism can be observed: Interlaken sounds more upscale than Aarmühle , and Savognin better than Schweiningen .
In the canton of Graubünden, efforts to preserve the Rhaeto-Romanic language have led to the successive renaming of German place names into the Rhaeto-Romanic form or supplementation by this in the form of a double name. The order could definitely be reversed at a later point in time. An example of this is the renaming from Celerina to Schlarigna / Celerina in 1943 and the change to Celerina / Schlarigna in 1950. In the southern valleys of Graubünden, the renaming to the Italian form can also be observed.
