The Premier League 1996/97 was the fifth season of the Premier League , which was hosted by the FA , and at the same time the 98th first division season in English football. It began on August 17, 1996 and ended on May 11, 1997.

Champion Manchester United . In the First Division , promoted AFC Sunderland and Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough FC had to relegate . The top scorer was Alan Shearer of Newcastle United with 25 goals .
