Princess of Asturias Prize
The Princess of Asturias Awards (Spanish: Premios Princesa de Asturias ) are high-level Spanish awards.
Award
Under the name of Prince of Asturias Awards (Spanish: Premios Príncipe de Asturias , actually Prince of Asturias Awards ), they were awarded annually between 1981 and 2014 in Oviedo , the capital of the Principality of Asturias , in the presence of the then Spanish heir to the throne, Infant Felipe of Spain (and since 2004 his wife Doña Letizia of Spain ) awarded by the Prince of Asturias Foundation. After Felipe was crowned King of Spain , the foundation and the awards were renamed in 2014 and are now named after the new Princess of Asturias and Infanta Leonor of Spain .
The award winners can be individuals, institutions or groups from around the world who have distinguished themselves by their résumé in one of the following eight categories: art , literature , social sciences , communication and humanities , unity, international cooperation, scientific and technical research and sport .
The deliberations of the various juries (one for each prize) begin in May and continue into September, when the decision on the winner of the sports prize is made. The deliberations of the juries take place over two days in the Hotel Reconquista in the center of the Asturian capital. On the second day of the deliberations, the jury president publishes the award verdict.
The prizes will be presented in the Campoamor Theater . The individual Princess of Asturias Prizes are endowed with a monetary amount of 50,000 euros. In addition, each award winner will be presented with a sculpture designed by the Catalan artist Joan Miró . In 2005 the Premios Príncipe de Asturias Foundation celebrated its 25th anniversary. On this occasion, one of the early winners, the Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer , presented her with the design for a cultural center in Avilés , Asturias. Construction of this major project began in the same year. The official inauguration of the Oscar Niemeyer Cultural Center took place on March 26, 2011.
