Relapse ( English for: " Fallback ") is the sixth solo album by the American rapper Eminem . It was released on May 15, 2009 on the Shady Records , Aftermath Entertainment and Interscope Records labels .

Prehistory and origin

Relapse is Eminem's first studio album since 2004, as the rapper took a break due to his pill addiction and writer's block. During this five-year hiatus, Eminem appeared as a producer and guest rapper, but not as a solo artist. Marshall Mathers also struggled with personal problems, for example he was divorced in 2006 and soon after learned of the death of one of his best friends, Proof . The rapper then, according to his own statements, became dependent on pain medication again - an earlier rehab treatment had not been successful.

Since mid-2007 , rumors of a new Eminem album have been circulating based on statements from other rappers on his Shady Records label . Jeff Bass worked with Eminem on more than 25 tracks, but none of them ultimately found their way onto the record. During this period, the rapper still suffered from writer's block, which is why Bass decided on an unusual recording technique: he just let Eminem improvise ( freestyle ) or only write one line at a time.

In December 2007, the rapper was hospitalized for an overdose and began rehab. According to his own statement, Eminem has been clean since April 20, 2008. Simultaneously with his pill addiction, the rapper also overcame his writer's block. The only song on the album that dates back to when he was in rehab is Beautiful .

From September 2008, Eminem and Dr. Dre recorded new songs in Florida and completed the album within the next few months.

Album presentation

On May 18th, the day Relapse was released in the USA, Eminem and Kon Artis gave a 35-minute concert in front of a little over 2000 fans at the MotorCity Casino in Detroit , where he performed the first pieces of the new album live. It was his first appearance in more than three years. Eminem also performed live on May 31 at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards with the songs We Made You and Crack a Bottle .

content

Main themes of the album are Eminem overcome pill addiction and its withdrawal therapy . He also deals with acts of serial killers , with the rapper returning to the horrorcore style of his first two albums and also using his alter ego Slim Shady again.

The album begins with the Skit Dr. West , in which Dominic West speaks to an addiction counselor who advises Eminem to keep drinking and not to care about his twelve-step program. When Marshall says he knows where this will take him, the doctor takes out pills and shakes them. Then a distorted voice sets in, which is supposed to personify Slim Shady, and explains to the rapper that he cannot leave him and that they will always stay together. At the end of the ski it turns out to be a dream, referring to When I'm Gone (the song in which Marshall Mathers shot Slim Shady in 2005). The album's second song, 3 am , starts right at the end of the skit and depicts Eminem as a serial killer who commits his deeds at night. His violent fantasies continue in Same Song & Dance with the kidnapping and murder of Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears and Stay Wide Awake . Same Song & Dance's upbeat rhythm is designed to get consumers to dance to the song without realizing what the piece is about.

As is so often the case, Eminem's family and past are discussed, so he looks for the reason for his drug addiction in his mother's drug consumption ( My Mom ) and presents himself as a victim of child abuse ( Insane ). The latter song is supposed to disgust the listeners and "make them throw up", as Eminem said in an interview. The idea came to him after writing the first line ("I was born with a dick in my brain / Yeah, fucked in the head"). Furthermore, Slim Shady introduces himself again after years of absence on Hello and Crack a Bottle and, in We Made You , once again hits an ironic all-round blow against various celebrities in We Made You , whereas in Medicine Ball he focuses on the late actor Christopher Reeve specializes or shoots his alleged ex-girlfriend Mariah Carey ( Bagpipes from Baghdad ). Eminem noted that this "celebrity bashing" was not intended to be a personal attack, but rather that he used prominent names that rhymed with certain words. Among other things, he chose Christopher Reeves because the listener should laugh at the song first and then be ashamed of it. Old Time's Sake is a duet between Eminem and Dr. Dre , which is about the long collaboration between the two. In almost all of these songs, Eminem raps with a certain accent that has been found annoying by many fans.

Towards the end of the album, the songs become more personal, Eminem now raps without an accent. In Must Be the Ganja , the rapper talks about how he is now addicted to studio work and that it replaces his previous drug use, while Déjà Vu talks about his overdose in 2007. Beautiful , the only ballad on the album, also refers to this period, when Eminem was at its lowest point and almost lost hope in the future, but ultimately also crossed this valley. The last song Underground refers to the time before Eminem was known and that he didn't have to worry about his explicit lyrics back then. In the bonus tracks, Eminem deals with his alter ego Slim Shady ( My Darling ) and his critics ( Careful What You Wish For ).

Like all previous albums, Relapse also contains skits with Paul Rosenberg and the openly gay character Ken Kaniff .

Production and samples

The album was written almost exclusively by Dr. Dre produced as executive producer . He created the beats for 3 am , My Mom , Insane , Stay Wide Awake , Déjà Vu , Crack a Bottle and Underground . He worked with Mark Batson on the production of Hello , Medicine Ball , Old Time's Sake and Must Be the Ganja . In addition, Dr. Dre with Trevor Lawrence, Jr. ( Bagpipes from Baghdad ) and Dawaun Parker ( Same Song & Dance ), and Eminem and Doc Ish ( We Made You ). Eminem only produced Beautiful (with the help of Jeff Bass as co-producer) and the bonus tracks My Darling and Careful What You Wish For . The Dr. West , Tonya and Mr. Mathers produced Dr. Dre and Eminem together.

Four tracks on the album contain samples of songs by other artists. Elements from Jock Box from The Skinny Boys can be heard on Insane . We Made You includes a sample of Walter Egan's Hot Summer Nights . Beautiful samples the song Reaching Out by Queen + Paul Rodgers and Crack a Bottle contains elements of Mais Dans Ma Lumière by Mike Brant .

Guest Posts

Guest parts by other artists can be found on only three songs on the album. The unknown singer Charmagne Tripp sings the chorus of We Made You . Eminem's producer and mentor Dr. Dre can be heard on both Old Time's Sake and Crack a Bottle . The rapper 50 Cent , who is under contract with Shady Records , also made a guest contribution to Crack a Bottle . Dominic West, Eminem's manager Paul Rosenberg, Elizabeth Keener, Matthew St. Patrick, Steve Berman and Angela Yee can be heard in various skits.

Five songs were extracted from the album. The first single, Crack a Bottle , was released for download in early February 2009 after it accidentally made its way onto the Internet and climbed to the top of the US charts, whereas it was unable to place in the German Top 100. At that point it was not yet clear whether the song would be included on the album. The first physical single We Made You was released a month before Relapse , climbed to 9th place in the German charts and stayed in the top 100 for ten weeks. The following two releases, 3 am and Old Time's Sake , were only available for download do not charter in Germany. The last single Beautiful was again released on CD, rose to position 39 in Germany and stayed in the top 100 for five weeks. In addition, the song Insane , although it was not released as a single, due to download numbers, entered the US charts at number 85 for a week.

Sales figures and awards

The album sold 608,000 copies in the US within the first week. Relapse has sold more than 7.5 million times worldwide. In Germany, the album received a gold record due to sales of more than 100,000 (after Relapse: Refill was released ) . Sales in the US are over two million, making the album double platinum .

At the Grammy Awards 2010 Eminem received the award for the best album of the year in the rap category and for the best performance by a duo or group in the rap category for the song Crack a Bottle .

The reviews of Relapse were average to positive. The site Metacritic calculated from 27 reviews of English-language media an average of 59%.

  • At laut.de the album received three out of a possible five points. The rapper's comeback is described as strong as usual, but without new ideas:

Relapse - Slim Shady is back to normal. [...] On the textual level, Shady nails his own lyrical therapy laconically as usual - it feeds on the personal experiences, abysses, opinions and tragedies of Marshall Mathers. They are known to be abundant, but they also account for its fame. "Mediocre. The record sounds like it was written in 2001 at best," says Mariah Carey's pissed off husband Nick Cannon. One can agree with him. But Cannon forgets that a well-prepared head nod steak fills the stomach better than the latest exotic beat creation. "

- Excerpt from the review by laut.de.
  • The website Rap.de certifies Eminem a successful comeback and awards five out of five stars:

The new Eminem album is great. Everything there. The feeling for the right hooks, the technique, the ludicrous wordplay, the melodies and last but not least the beats of a Dr. Dre production team in top form. […] Even if it is perhaps the eternal continuation of the Eminem Show and Relapse does not dismantle and reinvent Hip Hop like The Slim Shady LP did back then, Relapse is definitely the highlight of this Hip Hop year so far. "

- Excerpt from the review by Rap.de

"Relapse" may lack genuine musical innovation, but it still remains an exceptionally good pop album. [...] The undisputed focus is once again on the cunning storyteller Eminem [...] .

"Painful, honest and human record" and drew the comparison to The Eminem Show .
