The Royal National Park was the first national park in Australia . It was founded on April 26, 1879 and is located about 25 miles from central Sydney in New South Wales . This park was the second area in the world to be designated a national park - after Yellowstone National Park in the USA . The national park formed the starting point for the nature conservation and national park movement in Australia. Today it is connected to the Garawarra State Conservation park to form the Royal National Park and Garawarra State Conservation .

The 18,000 hectare site is one of the botanically richest areas in Australia with more than 1,000 plant species. There are also numerous species of birds and butterflies. The park area is on Hawkesbury sandstone . It was built as a recreation area for developing Sydney after the gold rush brought numerous people to Australia.

The park contains remnants of original rainforest, 75% of which has not existed since European settlement. Numerous trees grow in the park, such as acacias and banksia and eucalyptus . There are also heathlands and the Gymea Lily ( Doryanthes excelsa ) and orchids . Numerous insects such as butterflies , 23 species of birds, 43 mammals and 30 amphibians animate the park.

Australian National Heritage List

On September 15, 2007, the park was entered on the Australian National Heritage List due to its importance .
