The Scottish FA Cup was played for the 99th time in 1983/84 . The most important Scottish football cup competition, which was directed by the Scottish Football Association, began on December 10, 1983 and ended with the final on May 19, 1984 in Hampden Park in Glasgow. As the defending champion, the FC Aberdeen started in the competition, which had prevailed in the final last year against the Glasgow Rangers , and was thus the second time in a row cup winners. In the final of this year's cup, the Dons from Aberdeen and the city rivals the Rangers , and at the same time the record winners of the Celtic FC competition, faced each other. It was the third game in a row for Aberdeen and the eleventh overall since 1937 . Celtic reached the final for the 48th time. The final won with a 2-1 win after extra time, the favored FC Aberdeen . The referee of the game Bob Valentine for the first time since the final in 1927 with Roy Aitken a player of the court (after fouling Mark McGhee ). In addition to the dismissal in the 38th minute of the game, the referee also recognized an illegal offside goal by the Reds . After the end of the game, the club from Glasgow officially protested at the Scottish FA against the game standings, but without success. It was Aberdeen 's third cup win in a row and the fifth overall after 1947 , 1970 , 1982 and 1983 . The Dons won the Scottish Championship before Celtic that same year . With Aberdeen's participation in the European Cup , Celtic took part in the European Cup Winners' Cup the following year .
