The Scottish Football League Premier Division was played for the eleventh time in 1985/86 . It was also the 89th edition of a top soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. In the 1985/86 season, 10 clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 match days. Each team played twice at home and twice against every other team. The 2-point rule applied . In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The championship won for the 34th time in the club's history Celtic Glasgow . The title race was decided in favor of Celtic on the last day of the game due to the better goal difference. The Bhoys qualified as champions for the following European Cup of National Champions season 1986/87 . As a cup winner , FC Aberdeen qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup . Second, third and fifth placed Heart of Midlothian , Dundee United and Glasgow Rangers qualified for the UEFA Cup . Dundee United reached the final against IFK Göteborg which was lost 1: 2 in the two legs.
Since the league was increased to twelve teams for the following season, there was no relegated team this season. Glasgow Rangers' Ally McCoist was the top scorer with 24 goals .
