The Scottish Football League Premier Division was played for the 22nd time in 1996/97 . It was also the 100th edition of a top soccer division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. In the 1996/97 season, 10 clubs competed against each other in a total of 36 match days. Each team played twice at home and twice against every other team. In the event of a tie, the goal difference counted .
The Glasgow Rangers won the Scottish Championship for the 47th time in the club's history. With the 9th title in a row, the Rangers equalized the record of arch rivals Celtic Glasgow . This was able to collect as many championships as a result between 1966 and 1974 . The Gers qualified as champions for the 1997/98 Champions League season . As a cup winner , FC Kilmarnock qualified for the European Cup Winners' Cup . Second and third placed Celtic Glasgow and Dundee United qualified for the UEFA Cup .
The Raith Rovers were relegated to the First Division at the end of the season . Celtic Glasgow's Jorge Cadete was the top scorer with 25 goals .
