Spencer County is a county in the state of Kentucky in the United States . The county seat is Taylorsville , named after Richard Taylor , a mill owner. The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located north of the geographic center of Kentucky, is about 35 km to the northwest from Indiana and has an area of ​​497 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Shelby County , Anderson County , Nelson County , Bullitt County, and Jefferson County .

history

Spencer County was formed on January 7, 1824 from parts of Bullitt County, Nelson County and Shelby County. It was named after Captain Spier Spencer , who died in the Battle of Tippecanoe .

Spencer County's population was 11,766 as of the 2000 census . 119 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 4,251 households and 3,358 families. The population density was 24 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.50 percent white, 1.13 percent African American, 0.22 percent Native American, 0.08 percent Asian and 0.27 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.79 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.12 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 101.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 99.5 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 47,042 , and the median income for a family is $ 52,038. Males had a median income of $ 36,638 versus $ 24,196 for females.
