Stanyzja Luhanska ( Ukrainian Станиця Луганська ; Russian Станица Луганская Staniza Luganskaja ) is an urban-type settlement on the bank of the Siversky Donets in Luhansk Oblast in eastern Ukraine with 13,500 inhabitants (as of 2016). Stanyzja Luhanska is one of two local foundations of the Don Cossacks in today's Ukraine and the administrative center of the raion of the same name 20 km northeast of the Oblast capital Luhansk .
history
The place was founded by the Don Cossacks in the second half of the 17th century, but destroyed by the Tatars in 1684 . Rebuilt in 1688, this year is the official founding date. The place was initially called Luhanske , from 1718 Luhanska and from 1923 Stanychno-Luhanske (Станично-Луганське). In 2007 it was renamed to its current name. In 1923 the village became the center of the newly formed Stanychno-Luhanske Raion in Donetsk Oblast, and in 1938 Stanytsia Luhanska received urban-type settlement status.
During the war in Ukraine, separatists occupied the place on August 18, 2014, it was retaken by Ukrainian forces on August 21 and has been under Ukrainian control near the front line ever since. Numerous residents have since left the settlement. On April 16, 2015, the Lenin monument in the village was destroyed and removed.
For years, the crossing at Stanyzja Luhanska was the only one across the line of contact between the anti-government troops and the government troops in Luhansk Oblast. The transition was not suitable for vehicles during the whole time; around 200,000 people a month instead crossed it on a temporary wooden structure. In 2016, an unbundling of the troops in the vicinity of the bridge was agreed, which was carried out in June 2019, after which the Ukrainian troops carried out demining work.
