History and profile
The Thuringian Literature and Author Days originally came into being in 1998 at the suggestion of GGP Media GmbH and in particular the then head of the purchasing department, Hans Westerheide. The initiators also included the Thuringian regional association of the Association of German Writers , mainly represented by Matthias Biskupek and Landolf Scherzer, as well as the Reading Sign Association, which has taken on the organization of the festival. As further supporters came in the near future u. a. also: the Thuringian Ministry of Culture, the Sparkassen-Kulturstiftung Hessen-Thüringen, the Stadtwerke Energie Jena-Pößneck , the Thuringian Palaces and Gardens Foundation , the city of Ranis, the Friedrich-Bödecker-Kreis für Thüringen eV , the state center for political education and the Literary Society of Thuringia. This means that the Thuringian Literature and Author Days are a joint initiative of companies, politics, cultural foundations and literary associations. In the first year, Ranis Castle was the only venue. The readings initially only took place in the courtyard of the castle and in the “Red Salon”. Since the castle was renovated in 2008 , additional rooms for different formats have been available.
In the second year, additional venues and cooperation partners were added. There were readings and a. in Pößneck, Oppurg and Neustadt an der Orla in cooperation with libraries and churches. In the next few years the program grew to around 40 events over several weeks at numerous locations in Thuringia. The Thuringian Literature and Author Days thus conceptually pursue a synthesis of culture in cities and in rural areas. For example, the city of Ranis, and in particular the castle, has been successfully turned into an established cultural center. Linking different art fields is also important for the conception of the Thuringian Literature and Author Days. In ever new event formats, literature meets music, visual arts or performance. The program also includes radio play, theater and film events.
