The VW Amarok is a pickup model from the Volkswagen brand . 90,000 vehicles (single and double cabins) are to be built annually at the VW General Pacheco plant near Buenos Aires (Argentina).
The Amarok is sold worldwide (as of 2013), with the exception of the USA and Canada. VW is in talks with dealers in the USA and Canada to introduce the pickup in North America as well. Imports into the USA are prevented by an expensive import tax, which is supposed to protect the local pickup provider ("chicken tax"). Annual production of 40,000 vehicles at the Hanover plant (only double cab) began for the European and Russian markets at the end of June 2012. Production in Europe was discontinued in May 2020.
Naming
Amarok is the name of a wolf-like creature in Eskimo mythology .
The VW Amarok was on public display for the first time in January 2010 as the official support vehicle for the Dakar Rally in Chile and Argentina.
Study "Robust Pickup"
The Amarok is based directly on the Robust Pickup concept vehicle , which was first presented at the IAA for commercial vehicles in 2008.
The first photos were presented in December 2009.
Dimensions and equipment
The pickup with the VW model name VWN817 is 5.25 meters long, has a double cab and a loading area of 2.52 square meters. Since spring 2011 there has also been a version with a single cabin and a correspondingly longer loading area. The loading platform in the double cab is 1.55 meters long. With this loading area size, German tax authorities do not classify it as a "truck" under vehicle tax law and can no longer be taxed according to the gross vehicle weight even with a double cab. This regulation is no longer in use since the customs authorities took over the taxation of motor vehicles. The payload is up to 1.15 tons.
A 2.0 l bi-turbo diesel engine with 120 kW (163 hp) or a 2.0 l turbo diesel engine with 90 kW (122 hp) is optionally available. The basic model has rear-wheel drive. A permanent all-wheel drive with Torsen differential or a manually switchable all-wheel drive with reduction as well as a differential lock for the rear axle is available on request . The vehicle has a box frame , individually suspended wheels at the front from double wishbones with spring dampers , rack and pinion steering and a rigid rear axle suspended from leaf springs. There are internally ventilated disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear.
Since autumn 2011 it has also been possible to order a hardtop directly from the manufacturer. In January 2012, the Amarok with the 2.0-liter TSI engine with 118 kW (160 PS) and rear-wheel drive was added to the range in Australia.
A pickup study was presented at the GTI meeting on Lake Wörthersee (2013). This Amarok has a 202 kW (275 PS) 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine with a maximum torque of 600 Nm.
A revised version of the Amarok went on sale in September 2016. Since then, it has been powered by a three-liter V6 diesel engine, which also powers the Audi A6 or the VW Touareg . This engine is used in the Amarok in three output levels between 120 kW (163 PS) and 165 kW (224 PS), with the weakest only being available since spring 2017. The reason for the change is the lack of Euro 6 suitability of the previous unit, which has also been mandatory for light commercial vehicles since September 2016. The Amarok will also not be available with the 6d-Temp emissions standard, but only with 6c.
