Wilson County is a county in the state of Kansas in the United States . The county seat is Fredonia .

The county is located in southeast Kansas, about 25 miles south of Oklahoma , and has an area of ​​1,489 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Woodson County , Allen County , Neosho County , Montgomery County , Elk County, and Greenwood Counties .

history

Wilson County was formed in 1865. It was named after Colonel Hiero T. Wilson , the first white man who lived here at Fort Scott from September 1843.

Wilson County has a National Historic Landmark , Norman No. 1 oil well . A total of 8 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of August 30, 2017).

According to the 2000 census , Wilson County had 10,332 people in 4203 households and 2,849 families in Wilson County. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer.
