Zoltán Horváth (born March 12, 1937 in Balatonfüred ) is a former Hungarian saber fencer who won two Olympic medals.

Career

Horváth came to Budapest as a young talent, where he fought at the Vasas club and later at Vörös Meteor . Horváth won his first world championship title in the adult class with the Hungarian saber team at the world championships in 1957 and 1958 before the Soviet fencers. In 1959 the Poles won over the Hungarians. At the Olympic Games in Rome he won gold with the Hungarian team in front of the Poles and the Italians, and for the Hungarian saber fencers it was the seventh title in a row. In the individual competition in Rome, Rudolf Kárpáti won ahead of Horvath. While Kárpáti's victory after the final with eight fencers was certain, Horváth had to prevail in the jump-off against three other fencers with the same number of wins.

In 1962 Horváth won the world championships in the individual competition before the Poles Jerzy Pawłowski , in the team competition the Poles won before the Hungarians. In February 1964 Horváth suffered a serious car accident and had to stay in hospital for a longer period. Nevertheless, he entered the Olympic Games in Tokyo in October , the Hungarian team finished only fifth. In 1965 and 1966 he won two bronze medals in the individual, with the team he won his third world title in 1966 after 1957 and 1958. In 1967 Horváth ended his career after various quarrels in the Hungarian association. In 1971 he tried again to make a comeback, but could not qualify for the 1972 Olympic Games.
