history
Kalen is first mentioned in a document from 1174. The term "Kalen" is of Slavic origin and means "swamp", "morass". After 1236, the place Kalen, also "Kaland" (today Altkalen), located on the trade route from Stettin to Rostock, was owned by Prince Heinrich Borwin III. to Rostock as a city with strong fortifications. The new town got lands and in 1253 it was granted the town charter of Luebeck. But already in 1281 the town's rights were withdrawn. Prince Waldemar von Rostock founded Neukalen around ten kilometers south of the town of Bugelmast in a strategically much more important place . The old Kalen became a village again, to Altkalen .
On July 1, 1950, the previously independent municipality of Damm was incorporated. On January 1, 1951, Alt Pannekow was added. On January 1st, 1999 Kleverhof was incorporated.
