About this picture

The Flensburg-Land district was a district in Schleswig-Holstein that existed for 107 years. In 1974 he was awarded the neighboring district of Schleswig for Schleswig-Flensburg summarized.

geography

location

The district was in the northeast of Schleswig-Holstein around Flensburg on the Baltic coast.

Seat

He had his seat in the Flensburg Waitzstraße 1–3 in the so-called Kreishaus, actually a building ensemble consisting of the former administration house from the 18th century and the new office building from the 19th century.

Neighboring areas

At the beginning of 1974 the district bordered in the west on the district of North Friesland , in the south on the district of Schleswig and in the south-east on the district of Eckernförde . In the east it bordered the Baltic Sea , in the north on Denmark . The district town of Flensburg has not belonged to the district since 1889.

history

predecessor

The predecessor of the Flensburg district - as it was initially called after it was founded - was the Flensburg fiefdom or office, which developed as a sovereign district from the 14th century. It was one of the major offices in the Duchy of Schleswig, which existed until 1864/67 . As the (older) lower court districts, the following five Harden belonged to the office:

Since numerous aristocratic estates and ecclesiastical possessions were eliminated from the administration, especially in the far east, but also in the west (Gut Lindewitt ), the office was partially reduced. In return, smaller grit was temporarily part of the Bollersleben Bailiwick (but from 1490 to Hadersleben ), as well as two estates in Sundewitt (Danish: Sundeved ), whose origin is unknown. The office was not unified again until 1853, when the last estate and church districts returned. However, the east remained outside as the new Kapplerharde.

District House (Neues Amtshaus) in Flensburg

founding

After Schleswig-Holstein was annexed to Prussia , the Flensburg district was formed in 1867 from the office and city of Flensburg and a few other localities.

Flensburg independence

In 1889 the city of Flensburg left the district as an independent city. In 1874 it incorporated the suburbs of Norder- and Süder Sankt Jürgen and in 1875 the communities of Duburg , Fischerhof and Hohlwege . The circle also lost soon after in 1900 the community Jürgensgaard and 1910, the parish located Adelby communities Twedterholz , Twedt , Fruerlund (with Mürwik ) and Engelsby to the city of Flensburg.

The circle in the 20th century

On 15 June 1920, the county lost the rural communities Fröslee (parish Handewitt), Kragelund , Weibek , construction , Norderschmedeby , Krusau , Kollund (all in the parish Bov (dt. Construction )) and Hoenschnap (parish Holbøl (dt. Holebüll )) which had been added to the first voting zone and have since belonged to Denmark .

On April 26, 1970, the municipalities of Böxlund , Holt , Jardelund , Medelby , Osterby and Weesby were incorporated from the dissolved district of Südtondern into the district of Flensburg-Land. At the same time, the district gave the communities Mehlby and Toesdorf to the Schleswig district. In return, the Langstedt community moved from the Schleswig district to the Flensburg-Land district.

The number of municipalities in the district, which had been 132 in 1939, was reduced to 75 by March 1974 through amalgamations and incorporations. An extensive community reform took place on February 15, 1970, when 42 communities lost their independence.

End and merger to form the new greater district of Schleswig-Flensburg

In 1973 the Landtag of Kiel decided to merge the district of Flensburg Land and the district of Schleswig with the “Third Act on the Reorganization of Community and District Boundaries”. On March 24, 1974, the day of the local elections, the two districts of Flensburg-Land and Schleswig were combined to form the new Schleswig-Flensburg district. In the district building in Flensburg, the federal flag and the flag of Schleswig-Holstein were then taken down in a tattoo . The boundary stone in front of the district building had a black ribbon. Despite concerns at the time, the merging of the two circles went without problems and resulted in a solid unit.
