Bad Grund (Harz) is a unitary municipality in the western Harz in the district of Göttingen , Lower Saxony and a climatic health resort with a Heilstollen spa. The administrative headquarters are in the district of Windhausen .

Geographical location

Bad Grund is located in the Harz Nature Park between Seesen in the north-northwest, Clausthal-Zellerfeld in the east and Osterode am Harz in the south. To the north is the Hübichenstein on the federal road B 242 and the Iberg to the north-northeast of this road . The Harzer Försterstieg leads through Bad Grund .

Neighboring communities

The municipality of Bad Grund borders in the north on the town of Seesen ( district of Goslar ), in the south on the town of Osterode am Harz ( district of Göttingen ) and in the west on the municipality of Kalefeld ( district of Northeim ). The municipality has further borders with the two unincorporated areas Harz (district of Goslar) in the northwest and northeast and Harz (district of Göttingen) in the east.

Place name

Former place names from Grund were in the years 1317 Fundo, 1321 Grunt, 1322 Grunt, 1405 Grund, 1504 Grund, 1505 Grund, 1505 Grund and 1519 Grund. The place name is based on the reason in the sense of lowland . In civil as in Low German this is equally attested, for example althochdeutsch  grunt , Old Saxon reason for "reason", "bottom". In northwest Saxony, the word describes a "deep, gradually tapering cut in the terrain". In Middle Low German it is known as grunt , meaning “depth”, “valley”, “valley floor”, “valley floor”. North German is fundamentally "a valley between mountains", "a small valley."

Incorporations

On March 1, 2013, the member communities of the combined community Bad Grund (Harz) merged to form the new unified community Bad Grund (Harz).

Since the merger of the districts of Osterode am Harz and Göttingen on November 1, 2016, Bad Grund (Harz) has been part of the district of Göttingen.

Religions

  • The Evangelical Lutheran St. Antonius Church is located in the center of the mountain town of Bad Grund on the market, the parish belongs to the Clausthal-Zellerfeld parish. In the Taubenborn settlement built in the 1950s, the chapel on Taubenborn (Am Rösteberg) was consecrated on June 12, 1960 .
  • The Catholic St. Barbara Church was built in 1961/62 on Danziger Strasse. Lautenthal and Wildemann also belonged to the parish . The profanation took place on February 6, 2010 . Today the nearest Catholic church is in Badenhausen, eight kilometers away .
  • The New Apostolic Church at Hübichweg 12, built in 1926, was closed in 2007. The church building was sold and is now used as a residential building. The nearest New Apostolic Church is in Gittelde, nine kilometers away .

Municipal council

The council of the municipality of Bad Grund (Harz) consists of 22 councilors. This is the specified number for a municipality with a population between 8001 and 9000 inhabitants. The council members are elected for a five-year term by local elections. The current term of office began on November 1, 2016 and ends on October 31, 2021.

The full-time mayor is also entitled to vote and to sit in the municipal council.

The full-time mayor of Bad Grund is Harald Dietzmann (non-party). In the last mayoral election on January 20, 2013, he was elected unopposed with 76.86% of the vote. The turnout was 60.27%. Dietzmann took office on March 1, 2013. His deputies are Erich Sonnenburg (SPD) and Frank Brakebusch (CDU).

Regular events

During the course of each year, the Easter bonfires on Holy Saturday and the Walpurgis Night celebration on April 30 are among the much-attended event highlights. The light festival Pond in Flames in the Taubenborn housing estate , which has been held on the third Saturday in August since the 1970s, has now developed into one of the largest events in Bad Grund.

Bad Grund was mainly characterized by ore mining. In 1992 the last ore mine closed, from which six million tons of ore and 2500 tons of silver were extracted.

Via the state road 524 Bad Grund has a connection to the federal road 243 to Osterode am Harz and the federal road 242 to Clausthal-Zellerfeld and Seesen and thus the A 7 federal motorway .

The Gittelde-Bad Grund train station on the Seesen – Herzberg line is located in the Gittelde district .

Bad Grund can be reached with public transport buses. Until 1971, trains on the Gittelde – Bad Grund railway also stopped here .

  • Dietrich II of Katlenburg (10 ?? - 1085), Count in Lies- and Rittigau with the Einbeck estate, Count of Katlenburg, he had seized the market and coinage rights in Gittelde
  • Dietrich III. von Katlenburg (around 1075 / 80–1106), was the last Count of Katlenburg, he presumably first used the Katlenburg, which was built in the 11th century, and later the Stauffenburg near the important mint in Gittelde as a seat of power
  • Heinrich II of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel (1489–1568), Duke of Braunschweig-Lüneburg, Prince of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, he is considered the last Catholic prince in Lower Saxony, he had a long affair with the lady-in-waiting Eva von Trott, which he secretly quartered at Stauffenburg Castle in Gittelde
