Bell Bottom Blues is a song written by Eric Clapton and released by his band Derek and the Dominos in 1971 . The song deals with unrequited love and appeared on the album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs .

background

Bell-bottoms are flares , which in the 70s were popular. According to Clapton, he wrote the song for Pattie Boyd after she asked him to bring a pair of bell bottoms from the United States . Clapton also wrote other songs for her like I Looked Away and Layla . The piece was recorded before Duane Allman was involved in the recording sessions, so Clapton is the only guitarist on the song. Clapton recorded several guitar passages in which he used a soft and harmonious guitar playing. Other musicians who were involved in the recording of the song are Carl Radle ( bass ), Bobby Whitlock ( Hammond organ ) and Jim Gordon ( drums ).

Reception and awards

Allmusic critic Bill Janovitz described Clapton's vocal performance as "not only one of his personal best, but also one of the best in rock 'n' roll ." Critic Janovitz also refers to the passionate performance of the song on the 1991 double album 24 Nights . Ed Leimacher from Rolling Stone , however, saw the piece as not very relevant and of inferior quality (“filler”). The piece reached number 78 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1973.

Adaptation and cover versions

Clapton himself covered the song with an orchestra for the album 24 Nights from 1991. Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs covered Bell Bottom Blues in 2009 on their album Under the Covers, Vol. 2 . Bruce Springsteen used the line “I don't wanna fade away” for his song Fade Away from 1980. Lady Gaga refers to the title in her song Dope by singing: “I'm sorry and I love you, sing with me Bell Bottom Blue ".
