The women's DFB Cup was played for the 29th time in the 2008/09 season. The final took place on May 30, 2009 for the last time in the Berlin Olympic Stadium. The cup winner was the FCR 2001 Duisburg with a 7-0 final victory over 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam . It was the second title win for Duisburg and the highest final victory of all time. Defending champion 1. FFC Frankfurt had already failed in the second round at Bayern Munich .

The draw for the first round took place on July 4, 2008 as part of the annual conference of the 2nd Bundesliga in Frankfurt am Main . The six best-placed teams of the past Bundesliga season will receive a bye . These include 1. FFC Frankfurt, FCR 2001 Duisburg, 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam, Bayern Munich, SC 07 Bad Neuenahr and VfL Wolfsburg. The tickets were drawn by former national player Sandra Minnert .
Six second division teams had to retire after the first round. Two other second division teams were only able to prevail after extra time or penalty shoot-out. Oberliga climber Hoffenheim only just missed the sensation and was defeated on penalties against Leverkusen. 1. FC Saarbrücken and SG Essen-Schönebeck, however, were able to win their games in double digits.

2nd round
The draw for the second round took place on September 8, 2008 at the DFB headquarters in Frankfurt. In addition to the winners of the first round, the six teams that had a bye in the first round also intervene. The tickets were drawn by the former national player Renate Lingor .
In the top game of the second round, Bayern Munich beat the defending champions 1. FFC Frankfurt 1-0 with a goal from Nicole Banecki . For the first time since 1998 the cup final will take place without the 1. FFC Frankfurt. Most of the favorites prevailed. FCR 2001 Duisburg achieved the only double-digit victory at Werder Bremen. Hamburger SV and VfL Wolfsburg slid past a disgrace. HSV needed a penalty shoot-out at second division Bayer Leverkusen while VfL Wolfsburg was 2-1 down at regional division FFV Neubrandenburg a minute before the final whistle. Three goals in the final minutes made the turn. Bundesliga promoted FF USV Jena was eliminated from the second division 1. FC Saarbrücken while the second division FC Gütersloh 2000 lost to the regional division Arminia Ibbenbüren.

Round of 16
The draw for the round of 16 took place on October 27, 2008 at the DFB headquarters in Frankfurt am Main. The lots were drawn by the marksman Manuela Schmermund, who won the silver medal at the 2008 Paralympics in Beijing . The games took place on November 9, 2008. The game between Duisburg and Hamburg will not take place until December 10, 2008.
In the top game, Bayern Munich managed a 5-2 victory at SC 07 Bad Neuenahr. Nina Aigner , Julia Simic and an own goal by Anne-Kathrin Westphal ensured that the guests played 3-0 after the break. With a double strike from Isabell Bachor and Lydia Neumann , Bad Neuenahr came up again. In the last ten minutes Melanie Behringer and again Aigner ensured the clear victory. In the other games the favorites prevailed.

Quarter finals
The draw for the quarter-finals took place on November 17, 2008 at the DFB headquarters in Frankfurt. The tickets were drawn by the former Bundesliga player Katrin Kliehm . On December 21, 2008, three games were played. In the top game, FCR 2001 Duisburg retaliated for the quarter-final defeat the previous year and achieved a 6-5 win on penalties at the autumn champions Bayern Munich. Second division Wattenscheid 09 caused a surprise, with a 2-1 away win after extra time against SG Essen-Schönebeck. In the third game, VfL Wolfsburg defeated SC Freiburg 2-0 on their place. The match between Sindelfingen and Potsdam was postponed to February 8, 2009 due to the unplayability of the place. Here the Finnish national player Essi Sainio scored the goal of the day.

Semifinals
The draw for the semi-finals took place on January 24, 2009 as part of the DFB women's indoor cup . Former national player Sandra Minnert drew the lots at the tournament in Magdeburg's Bördelandhalle .
FCR 2001 Duisburg prevailed 3-1 against VfL Wolfsburg on Holy Saturday. Femke Maes put Duisburg in the lead after 24 minutes. Shelley Thompson equalized just two minutes later . In the 70th minute of the game, Marina Hegering brought the hosts back into the lead, before Maes made everything clear again with the 3-1. The game in the PCC Stadium saw 1,720 spectators.
On Easter Monday, 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam followed suit with a 3-0 victory over second division club Wattenscheid 09. Anja Mittag put the hosts in the lead after 39 minutes. In the 73rd minute, Jennifer Zietz increased it to 2-0, before noon again four minutes before the final whistle for the final score. 1,804 spectators saw the game in the Karl Liebknecht Stadium .
