Cadastral communities
Gloggnitz is divided into ten cadastral communities . They mostly correspond to the individual offices of the former provost government and were the tax communities of this.
- Abfaltersbach:
- A hamlet lying in a ditch. The name comes from mhd. Apfalter, affalter = wild apple tree.
- Aue:
- Place and Bach have the same name. The Au used to refer to a land surrounded by water, an island or the river bank.
- Berglach:
- A hamlet on the slope of the Weißjackl. The name is to be interpreted as "with the mountain (l) ern", with the people on the mountain.
- Eichberg:
- In 1343 a distinction is made between an "Aichperchsuperior" and an "Aichperchinferior", today the Vorderberg and Hintereichberg. Not only the scattered houses or hamlets were called Eichberg, but also the 4 km long mountain range, which stands out in several Kogel, Hügel and Riegel.
- Gloggnitz (Furth and Gföhl):
- Gloggnitz is already an old settlement. When the first Benedictine monks came in 1084 and ten years later had already built a small monastery, it is said to have existed long ago. The core of the place is around the main square (since 1970 Dr. Karl Renner-Platz), which was still Anger in 1879. The town center was transformed several times.
- Dig:
- A gang in a fold of the Raachberg, also known as a "grave".
- Hay field:
- The Rotte wrote to Heveld in 1343, later also Häfeld.
- Saloder:
- A group of nine houses was called Saloter in 1347. The road up from Stuppach was laid out in 1963.
- Stuppach:
- After Gloggnitz, it is the largest and most important cadastral community of the local community Gloggnitz, both in terms of population and economically. The KG could be divided into four parts: the village with the castle, the former factory with the houses, the Buchbachgraben and the Stuppachgraben.
- Weissenbach:
- Bach and village have the same name.
history
The area around Gloggnitz was probably settled in the Paleolithic , as some finds in the area suggest. The name Gloggnitz suggests Slavic origins due to its ending with -itz . The meaning of the name Gloggnitz could be assumed with Glocniza (brook from Slav. Klokotnica , means "gurgling brook" or from glognica , blackthorn ).
Gloggnitz was first mentioned in 1094 in a deed of donation from Count Ekbert I. von Formbach . From the founding of the Gloggnitz monastery to the abolition of the monastery in the course of secularization in 1803, it shaped the history of Gloggnitz.
During this time, the name Markt Gloggnitz appears for the first time in a document in 1556, the name Markt can only be proven with a document from 1622.
In 1819, Emperor Franz I granted the privilege to hold annual fairs twice. From the middle of the 19th century , Gloggnitz experienced an upswing due to industrialization. Factories are built for the textile industry and the wood processing industry. In 1842 the rail link from Vienna to Gloggnitz (now part of the Südbahn ) was completed, and Vienna has been quickly and easily accessible since then .
With the completion of the Semmering Railway (builder: Carl Ritter von Ghega ) in 1854, the Semmering can also be overcome more quickly.
The elevation to the city took place on October 20, 1926. In 1948 Gloggnitz received Kreszentia "Zenzi" Hölzl, one of the first women mayors in Austria. At the end of the war , the first headquarters of the Soviet troops was in Gloggnitz . As early as April 3, 1945, the future Federal President Karl Renner , who was living in Gloggnitz at the time, made contact with the occupying power to establish the Second Republic.
In 1992 the Lower Austrian state exhibition "The Conquest of the Semmering - Rax - Schneeberg" landscape took place in Gloggnitz Castle .

Economy and Infrastructure
The original economy of Gloggnitz consisted of pitching , agriculture, forestry and wine management , the latter no longer existing in Gloggnitz due to unsuitable climatic conditions and the location.
With the Gloggnitz monastery, the first manorial businesses developed and with the industrial revolution some factories developed.
The serious changes in all economic areas have taken giant steps in Gloggnitz. A few decades ago, the small-scale commercial enterprise was responsible for economic activity, but in the last 30 years Gloggnitz has developed from an almost purely commercial and railway town into an economically pulsating town in almost all business areas.
Today there are several industrial companies in Gloggnitz, such as For example, the company Huyck Austria, the company Karasek plant and container construction and the company Lindt & Sprüngli , who have understood how to advance to the top international in their field.
Thanks to the personal commitment of the company owners and the high level of technical skills of their employees, many of the medium-sized and small businesses have developed into companies that are highly valued at home and abroad. First and foremost the companies Koss, Pusiol and Wiedner should be mentioned here.
Two powerful transport companies are also available to the Gloggnitz companies for their international business, the Sperrer company in Wiener Straße in Gloggnitz and the Palka company in Aue.
In a special area, namely the breeding and rearing of young chickens, the Schropper company has developed into one of the leading model companies in this sector through innovation and high technical competence.
In contrast to other rather negative examples, Gloggnitz has developed extremely positively as a shopping city. Thanks to a high entrepreneurial willingness to take risks and also with the support of the community, it has been possible to develop a shopping center in the middle of the village, which has become an attraction not only for customers from Gloggnitz, but from the entire region.
The permanent upswing was significantly reinforced by the redesign of the main square, the street space and the sidewalks in the city center. In the meantime, new, attractive shops are settling in Gloggnitz. As a result, Gloggnitz again offers a variety of shopping opportunities, and buying locally has become back in .
In the field of gastronomy a lot has also developed in recent years, various cafes, small snack bars and several inns with home-style cuisine and international specialties offer something for every guest. The restaurant in Gloggnitz Castle has been available for weddings and celebrations, but also for day guests, since March 2001.
The association for city marketing "For Gloggnitz 2000-plus" not only organizes a wide variety of events, but also, together with the community, a permanent weekly market which, as an additional attraction on the main square, brings many new visitors to Gloggnitz.
Mining, Industry and Industrial History
Due to the geological location on the edge of the Paleozoic Grauwackenzone , some ores and other mineral resources can be found in the vicinity of Gloggnitz , so that various mining activities developed. Among the deposits are to be mentioned: Grillenberg ( iron ), Gloggnitz and Aue (especially magnesite ), and the mines for barite (on the Kleinkogel) and for gypsum ( Schottwien ) at the foot of the Semmering Pass . Hundreds more have geologists beyond the district Gloggnitz minerals found, including the previously unknown, according to the site Hart named Hartite .
Lignite was more important until well into the 20th century, especially at Enzenreith and Hart. In the last-mentioned district there is a well-stocked mining and local history museum , which also offers programs for children and for finding minerals. In addition to an exhibition on the equipment and culture of the miners, there is also the “memory gallery ”. It resembles a large mine disaster , which on June 26, 1924 in a gallery of the coal mine occurred Hart.
In addition to mining, smelting also developed . So there was the first nickel smelter of the Habsburg Monarchy in Gloggnitz . a. Processed nickel and arsenic from the Hopfriesen near Rohrmoos (Schladming).
To factory-ups in Gloggnitzer municipality it was not until 1840, were processed and especially iron, textiles, wood and plastics.
In 1845 Kapar Erdl built a spinning factory in Stuppach . The entire ownership of the Erdl'schen spinning factory passed from the heirs to the AG of the Schlöglmühl paper factory .
In 1870 Princess Franziska von Liechtenstein built the paper factory in Stuppach and 5 years later the cellulose factory. Both passed into the possession of the privately owned paper mill Schlöglmühl, which in 1908 sold the plants in Stuppach and Schlöglmühl to Neusiedler AG . In 1957, NAG closed the cellulose factory and in 1972 the paper factory. In its prime (1956) the Stuppach works had up to 400 employees.
The second large factory from the Wilhelminian era that is still in operation is the felt cloth factory . In 1852 the Volpini de Maestri brothers founded a carded yarn spinning mill in the city of Gloggnitz, which they converted into a cap factory (Fezfabrik) in 1871. In 1908 the new facility was created on the Obere Zeilfeld. After the First World War (1923), the Gloggnitz factory was spun off and continued independently as an AG of the Austrian Fezfabriken. In addition to cloth production, paper felts and technical fabrics were manufactured as early as 1945 . From 1950 to 1955 the plant was significantly enlarged. Since 1967 only technical products have been produced (felts for the paper and asbestos cement industry, synthetic felts, needle felts) as the only producer in Austria. In 1975 the plant became the property of the Huyck Corporation in North Carolina (USA). In 1980 the Huyck Corporation was incorporated into the BTR group in Boston and has belonged to the Xerium SA group since 1999 . At the best of times, almost 900 people were employed in Gloggnitz.
In 1974 the plastic factory Roco-Modellspielwaren established itself in a new building in Gloggnitz and gave up its temporary arrangements in Schmidsdorf and Furth. It is the branch of the Salzburg company founded by Heinz Rössler and produces rails, switches, motors, circuit boards, pantographs, controls and wheels for model railways .
The youngest industrial company is the Lindt & Sprüngli chocolate and sugar confectionery factory (FL Hofbauer AG), which built one of the most modern and environmentally friendly production facilities in Europe in the Stuppach industrial area, between Schwarza and Südbahn, and put it into operation in 1993. Depending on the season (Easter, Christmas), 300-350 people, mostly women, are employed there.
Also significant is Norbert Karasek GmbH for plant construction , founded in 1967 in the Stuppach industrial area , which took over GIG Attnang-Puchheim in 1996 as the "KarasekGroup" and expanded to Graz in 1998 . In addition to the main markets of Germany and Austria, an international sales network has been established since 1998, which currently includes eight countries. Since 2005 the family business has been building systems for the chemical industry , paper and pulp , as well as the pharmaceutical and food industries as "GIG Karasek GmbH" .
Agriculture
While there were still farms in the market area after the First World War (Mauser, Baumgartner, Pirner, Pusiol, Hönigschnabel), there are no longer any farmhouses in the city that are full-time farmers. According to the Gloggnitz District Chamber of Farmers , there were still 81 farms in the entire municipality in 2005, 9 full-time farms, 11 part-time farms and 60 part-time farmers.
The significant decline in agriculture can already be seen in the large amount of construction activity, which can only flourish as building land through the sale of agricultural land, as well as the results of the land surveys and cattle censuses.
Much arable land was lost to agriculture and is now a built-up area with larger or smaller gardens.
Even the forest garden no longer exists, only the forest garden road reminds of it. It was laid out in 1908 as a federal forest garden with a size of 1.64 ha, but has lost 0.52 ha due to the construction of the bypass road from Gloggnitz. In 1968 it became a state forest garden. White and black pines, larches , spruces , occasionally also sycamore maple , oak and tree of gods were grown and mainly supplied the forest owners in the Neunkirchen district in quantities of 10 to 20,000 pieces. Four women were last employed from April to October. The seeds required for this came from the Klenganstalten in Wiener Neustadt . In 1971 the forest garden was closed.
Today, the work of the farmers is largely mechanized and modernized, from stable work to field and forest work. This makes the hard work of the farmers easier, but it is also a means of countering the ongoing rural exodus. And technology enables the farmers to work on the side. Today we speak of full-time, part-time and part-time businesses.
Whereas in the past the interests of farmers were represented by agricultural associations (casinos), this is what the Gloggnitz District Chamber of Farmers, founded in 1924, does today. The source of supply and delivery point is the Raiffeisen warehouse Neunkirchen -Gloggnitz und Umgebung reg. Cooperative ltd. in Hofbauer-Straße 4. The agricultural cooperative Payerbach -Reichenau had existed since 1921 and opened a branch at Gloggnitz train station . It burned down when the Russians marched in in 1945. The branch was housed in rented premises until the cooperative opened a new branch in Gloggnitz in 1953 after purchasing and erecting a demolished sawmill, which, however, soon overtook the parent company in Payerbach. In 1960 the company headquarters was relocated to Gloggnitz. In 1962 a new workshop was started. The centralization efforts of the Raiffeisen Association resulted in a merger of the Neunkirchen and Gloggnitz camps in 1971.
Water supply
Historical review
At the time of the creation of the waterworks in what is now the municipality of Gloggnitz, there was no water supply network as it is today. The population had to fetch water from a total of 15 tapping points on Silbersberg, Hauptstrasse, Wiener Strasse and Hart. The place at that time was supplied by the "fragrance source", which had a discharge of 350 m³ / day and was equipped with a 600 m³ elevated tank.
The water supply today
The "Palka-Quelle" (discharge 2592 m³ / day) supplies the cadastral communities of Aue and Weißenbach, as well as the majority of the Gloggnitz population, and flows via a 5.5 km long gravity line into the Hart elevated tank, which has a capacity of 2600 m³. The water from the Palka spring is sterilized by means of a UV system. Total hardness (GH): approx. 20 °, of which carbonate hardness (CH): 9.3 °.
The "Eichberg-Quelle" (GH 5.8 ° / CH 4 °) supplies four houses in the Eichberg cadastral community with water. The Eichberg spring is disinfected using sodium hypochlorite lye.
The "Fliedergrabenquelle" (GH 3.9 ° / CH 3.7 °) supplies 40 houses in Stuppach (Saloderstrasse and Buchbachgraben). In Stuppach there is also a second elevated tank with a capacity of 600 m³. The Fliedergraben spring is also disinfected using sodium hypochlorite lye.
The residents of KG Heufeld are completely supplied by the water network (GH 9 ° / CH 8 °) of the market town of Payerbach.
The entire water network has around 1850 house connections and 150 hydrants. The main lines have a diameter between 50 and 350 mm and a total length of about 80 km. The water consumption is between 2000 and 2500 m³ per day.
Traffic situation
Gloggnitz is located on Wiener Neustädter Straße B 17 ( Vienna - Semmering ), which has bypassed the city since 1963. Gloggnitz is a road junction as the starting point of Höllental Straße B 27 (Gloggnitz - Reichenau ), the regional roads L134 (Gloggnitz - Otterthal - Kirchberg am Wechsel ), L4163 (Gloggnitz - Prigglitz ) and L4160 (Gloggnitz - Hart ). Since 1989, Gloggnitz has had its own exit from the Semmering expressway S6 and is thus also directly connected to the Austrian motorway network.
Gloggnitz was the terminus of the Südbahn before the mountain line over the Semmering into the Mürz Valley was built.
Street
Gloggnitz has a departure from the Semmering expressway S 6, which joins the south motorway A 2 in the northeast at the Seebenstein junction , which leads north to Vienna (75 km away) and is conveniently driven south to Gleisdorf (125 km).
15 km to the southwest, the S 6 leads over the Semmering mountain saddle into the Mürz Valley, after about 66 km it passes Kapfenberg and Bruck, where the S 36 continues in a straight line in the Mur-Mürzfurche in the Mur-Mürzfurche towards St. Michael in Upper Styria (for Carinthia from the northeast and Upper Austria from the southeast) and then the S 35 southwards via the A 9 to Graz (118 km) and the motorway junction with the A 2 at Seiersberg (123 km).

The coat of arms of Gloggnitz
Around the year 1084 Ekbert I, Count von Formbach -Neuburg (Bavaria) and Pütten is said to have given away an area in the area of today's Gloggnitz. However, this area is referred to in the deed of donation as the "area where the Glocniza flows into the Schwarza". Glocniza then meant something like "gurgling (bubbling) brook".
At around the same time, the first monk cell of the later Benedictine monastery, which was profaned in 1803, was already in what is now the city. Until the end of the 12th century, the art of bell casting was mainly practiced by Benedictine monks. The first written theoretical treatise on bell casting dates from 1155.
After obtaining town charter in 1926, the municipal council finally decided on November 9, 1926 that the town should now also have a coat of arms. Although the name of Gloggnitz actually has nothing to do with a bell, the bell that the Benedictine monks used became part of the coat of arms. The place name was interpreted in the sense of a folk etymology .
