Foundation and first years

The euro Eurowings Luftverkehrs AG was established in 1993 by the merger of Nürnberger Flugdienst (NFD) and the travel and flight industry (RFG) in Dortmund (later "regional airport"). Albrecht Knauf initially held 98.2 percent of the Eurowings shares. Eurowings later connected several German regional airports with Amsterdam and Paris in cooperation with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Air France . In 1996 about 500,000 passengers were carried on these routes.

Takeover by Lufthansa

From January 1, 2001, Deutsche Lufthansa AG initially held a 24.9 percent stake in the airline, and on April 1, 2004, the stake was increased to 49 percent. From December 22, 2005, there was a voting agreement between Lufthansa and a trustee of the majority shareholder Albrecht Knauf, through which Lufthansa was assigned a further 1,0001 percent of Eurowings shares and thus had economic control over Eurowings. Within the Knauf Group, the shares were assigned to Eurowings Beteiligungs GmbH. Eurowings' regional flight connections were marketed as Lufthansa flights, the planes were largely painted in Lufthansa Regional's livery - the Eurowings brand disappeared from the market.

On August 13, 2011 Lufthansa took over 100 percent of Eurowings. On November 1, 2011, the legal form changed to GmbH . The reason for the conversion was the adjustment to Lufthansa's shareholding structures. A wholly owned subsidiary of Eurowings AG was the low-cost airline Germanwings , which was founded in 1997 as Eurowings Flug GmbH and renamed Germanwings GmbH on October 27, 2002. Germanwings was sold to Lufthansa on January 1, 2009. This led the company through Lufthansa Commercial Holding GmbH .

In January 2010, Eurowings announced that all Bombardier CRJ200 and CRJ700 will be gradually phased out for economic reasons. This meant halving the previous fleet. In March 2010, plans were also published that the administration would move from Dortmund to Düsseldorf on September 1, 2010. A large part of the Eurowings fleet is already stationed there. On March 1, 2011, technology operations were finally concentrated in Düsseldorf, and the aircraft yard in Nuremberg was given up. It was also decided to take over eight more Bombardier CRJ900s .

From October 27, 2013, Eurowings also operated flights on behalf of Germanwings. On April 7, 2020, the parent company Lufthansa announced the discontinuation of Germanwings flight operations.

Wings concept

Eurowings headquarters in Düsseldorf

On December 3, 2014, the Lufthansa Supervisory Board approved the Wings concept. Originally, the plan was to have the planes managed by Austrian Airlines crews , which is why Eurowings Europe GmbH , based in Vienna, was founded in August 2015 . From June 2016, three Airbus A320-200s were stationed in Vienna-Schwechat .

In October 2015, the flights of Germanwings and Eurowings were bundled and have been offered under the brand name "Eurowings" ever since. That is why Eurowings' Bombardier fleet has been supplemented by Airbus A320-200 aircraft. On October 25, 2015, Eurowings GmbH took over responsibility for the flights and is now the contractual partner of the passengers. Germanwings has been the wet lease operator of Eurowings since November 1, 2015. Germanwings therefore uses aircraft and aviation personnel on behalf of Eurowings ( ACMI contracts ). Two A330-200s have been leased for long-haul routes , which Sunexpress Deutschland has been operating under a wet lease agreement since November 2, 2015 . In November 2015, Eurowings' first long-haul flight started with an Airbus A330-200 on the Cologne / Bonn - Varadero ( Cuba ) route .

Expansion of the long haul

In January 2016, critical media reports about Eurowings increased, among other things because of long delays and cancellations on long-haul routes . According to the company, seven percent of all Eurowings long-haul flights were delayed.

The parent company Lufthansa reacted in mid-January by setting up a task force. At the beginning of February 2016, a plan of action was presented that aims to reduce delays with more aircraft and fewer destinations, among other things. The flights to Boston and Las Vegas , which were scheduled for May 4th, were initially postponed by a month to June 1st and the flights to Iran were put on hold for the time being. The flights to Boston started as planned, but were canceled again on August 28th. For this, Miami was added to the flight plan on September 1, 2016.

In mid-May 2016, a new partnership was entered into with the football club Borussia Dortmund . This also includes the transport of the team to Champions League games, which was previously carried out by Turkish Airlines . For this purpose an Airbus A320-200 was given a special paint scheme. This partnership aims to make the airline better known throughout Europe.

In 2017, the long-haul fleet was expanded to four aircraft. In July 2017, Eurowings launched a new long-haul connection to Namibia. From November 2017, Eurowings flew to destinations in the Caribbean from Düsseldorf in order to replace flight cancellations due to the insolvency of Air Berlin in October 2017.

From the 2018 summer flight schedule, Eurowings took over the long-haul routes from Düsseldorf to Miami and from Berlin to New York from its parent company Lufthansa; in addition, new long-haul routes as well as those previously operated by Air Berlin were added, such as from Düsseldorf to New York JFK and Fort Myers (the flights were operated by Brussels Airlines ). From November 2018 all long-haul flights from Cologne / Bonn to Düsseldorf were relocated. In June 2019 it was announced that Eurowings would give up long-haul routes and that the fleet would be standardized on the Airbus A320 family.

Cooperation with Air Berlin

At the end of 2016 it was announced that Lufthansa will take over up to 40 aircraft from the Airbus A320 family in wet lease from Air Berlin. This agreement was approved by the Federal Cartel Office on January 30, 2017 . 35 aircraft are now used by Eurowings, five went to Austrian Airlines . These have been leased by Lufthansa for six years and have been used in the Eurowings route network since the 2017 summer flight schedule. Eurowings assumed the economic risk. On February 15, 2017, Eurowings retired its last Bombardier CRJ900 , which sealed the end of Eurowings as a regional airline.

On August 15, 2017, Air Berlin filed for bankruptcy under self-administration . Lufthansa then announced that it was starting negotiations to take over parts of the bankruptcy estate in order to continue to operate the aircraft from Air Berlin.

At the same time, a merger with Brussels Airlines was planned by the end of 2020, but was abandoned in June 2019.

Destinations

Eurowings mainly operates flights to German and European destinations from its bases. Long-haul destinations in North America and the Caribbean are also offered from Düsseldorf and Munich . From the 2019/2020 winter flight schedule, destinations in Africa and North America will also be offered from Frankfurt .

From November 2017 to the beginning of April 2020, German Airways (formerly Luftfahrtgesellschaft Walter; LGW for short) operated some De Havilland DHC-8-400s for Eurowings on short routes within Europe from Düsseldorf. The destinations included London Heathrow Airport and Paris Charles-de-Gaulle .

Further destinations were offered by Eurowings Europe from Salzburg , Vienna and Palma de Mallorca under the name Eurowings.

Code sharing

Eurowings has codeshare agreements with All Nippon Airways , Austrian Airlines , Brussels Airlines , Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines , Swiss and United Airlines . Eurowings has been offering feeder flights for South African Airways since October 2017 , as this airline only serves the destinations Frankfurt , London and Munich in Europe .
