Francheville ( Provençal : Franchevéla ) is a french commune with 14,198 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Métropole de Lyon in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . Francheville belonged to the canton of Tassin-la-Demi-Lune until 2015 .

history

Francheville is the first suburb of Lyon historically. “Franca Villa” gained in importance in Roman times. Important trade routes lead through its territory to Lugdunum , the capital of the Gallo-Roman Empire.

In 1193, Archbishop Renaud De Forez had a castle built on the hill above the Yzeron valley to protect his lands against enemy attacks. Between 1624 and 1642 Cardinal de Richelieu had the "castel de Francheville" torn down because he feared the strategic importance of the city at the gates of Lyon.
