Franklin is an independent city in Virginia , United States . However, while the city is independent, it is often counted as part of Southampton County . Franklin has a population of 8,594 (2010).

The city has an area of 21.8 km², of which 21.6 km² is land and 0.2 km² is water.
history
The town of Franklin had its beginnings in the 1830s as a railroad stop along the Blackwater River . The river was then used to transport goods from Albemarle Sound to North Carolina and vice versa.

The climate in Franklin is characterized by hot and humid summers and mild to cool winters. According to the Köppen climate classification system, Franklin has a humid subtropical climate, which is abbreviated to "Cfa" on climate maps.
