First in the 1998/99 season of the German Bundesliga and thus German men's championship was FC Bayern Munich . The season began on August 14, 1998 and ended on May 29, 1999.
Season overview
While Bayern Munich became German champions with a difference of 15 points and SV Werder Bremen, who was one point before the relegation zone, won the DFB Cup against Bayern, two events in particular were seen as defining for the season: The Champions League final between Bayern Munich and Manchester United ( 1: 2, two goals from Manchester’s stoppage time) and the relegation decision on the last day of the Bundesliga. Third place for Hertha BSC was their best placement since 1978.
Last game day
Before the last matchday on May 29, 1999 Borussia Mönchengladbach and VfL Bochum were already relegated. For Gladbach it was the first ever relegation after 34 years of membership in the Bundesliga. The third relegated team had to be determined between 1. FC Nürnberg , VfB Stuttgart , SC Freiburg , Hansa Rostock and Eintracht Frankfurt . Since two of these teams played against each other in Nürnberg and Freiburg, everyone still had the opportunity to stay up in the league on their own. Nürnberg and Stuttgart would have been a draw, Freiburg and Rostock would have been enough to win any amount, while Frankfurt needed a six-goal win to stay in the league (practically five, as an 11:11 between Nürnberg and Freiburg was not to be expected).

Stuttgart led 1-0 early, deservedly won against Werder Bremen and managed to stay in the league. In the other games: Nuremberg – Freiburg, Bochum – Rostock and Frankfurt – Kaiserslautern, however, a dramaturgy developed that made the relegation decision the most dramatic in the history of the Bundesliga:
- 68th minute
At this point in time, there was much evidence of a relegation of Frankfurt, which had the fewest chances this matchday anyway: The three clubs placed directly in front of Frankfurt were in the lead in their games: Stuttgart 1-0 against Bremen, who had already been saved, Rostock with 1-0 in Bochum, Freiburg 2-0 in Nuremberg. The club, on the other hand, seemed saved despite the deficit, because for the relegation of Nuremberg not only would Nuremberg have to lose and Rostock would have to win in Bochum, but above all Frankfurt would have to win against Kaiserslautern with a three-goal difference if it remained at the 0-2 deficit of Nuremberg would. Eintracht, which would have had to win with a six or five goal difference in order to maintain the league on its own, initially led against last year's champions Kaiserslautern, but the Red Devils , who were still able to achieve participation in the Champions League , were the same after 68 minutes it was 1: 1 - too little for Frankfurt. In the last twenty minutes of the season, events rolled over:

- 70th to 74th minute
Frankfurt took the lead again against Kaiserslautern (70th minute of the game). When Bochum turned a 0-1 into a 2-1 (71st and 74th) almost simultaneously against Rostock, Rostock would have been relegated and Frankfurt would have been saved.

- 77th to 82nd minutes
Rostock equalized again (77th). This would not have been enough to save the game because Frankfurt scored two more goals (80th and 82nd) and, with the score of 4: 1, even overtook Nuremberg in terms of goal difference and because of the more goals scored. At this point in time, Hansa Rostock would still have been relegated, i. That is, the Ostseestädter needed a victory at this point.

Nuremberg scored the 1: 2, and although the Franks were still behind, this score would have saved them from relegation due to the better goal difference against Eintracht Frankfurt, for which the clear 4: 1 win against Kaiserslautern would not have been sufficient.

- 89th minute
Frankfurt's Jan Åge Fjørtoft managed to score the unbelievable 5: 1 against Kaiserslautern after climbing over and thus saving his club from relegation. Nürnberg, which would now have been relegated again, received a last chance almost at the same time: After a header defense by Freiburg, Marek Nikl rushed from the background and hit the ball with a long-range shot at the post. The ricochet fell at Nuremberg's Frank Baumann , who shot the ball into the arms of Freiburg keeper Richard Golz from a short distance . The equalization would have meant relegation in Frankfurt.
Due to the missed scoring chance, it stayed with the Nuremberg defeat, and since Rostock won 3-2 in Bochum and Frankfurt 5-1 against 1. FC Kaiserslautern, 1. FC Nürnberg had to relegate. The club , which before the last match day - with three points and five goals ahead of a relegation place in twelfth place - seemed to have the best chance of relegation, in the end had the same goal difference as the Frankfurt Eintracht, but had four goals less shot. It was particularly tragic for the Franconians that many club fans hadn't even noticed at the time of the final whistle in the stadium in Nuremberg that their team had been relegated.
This last game day of the season is considered a great moment of the Bundesliga conference on the radio. The reporters Manfred Breuckmann in Bochum, Günther Koch in Nuremberg and Dirk Schmitt in Frankfurt managed to intensively convey the drama of the overturning events (above all Koch, the Nuremberg goal to make it 1: 2 with a cracking voice and the sentences "I pack 'Not that! I can't take that anymore! I don't want to see that anymore! "commented). Your rousing report was award-winning, distributed on phonograms and published in book form.
