II. Division 1962/63
Bundesliga 1963/64

The football regional league 1963/64 was the first season of this league.

history

By 1963, five existed in Germany as the top leagues top leagues . When the Bundesliga was introduced and the top leagues were abolished as the first leagues, the DFB established five regional leagues as the second division. The best 16 teams of the individual upper leagues qualified for the Bundesliga, the regional league was put together from the remaining teams and from the leaders of the 2nd division (in the north only from the amateur leagues).

The regional associations were responsible for the individual regional leagues : For the North - North German Football Association , for the West - West German Football and Athletics Association , Southwest - Football Regional Association Southwest , South - South German Football Association and Berlin - Association of Berliner Ballspielvereine . The best teams in the individual regional leagues played the two promoted teams into the Bundesliga in two four-team promotion rounds.

North

Season course

In the debut year 1963/64, the Regionalliga Nord was made up of the 13 remaining upper division clubs in the 1962/63 round (VfR Neumünster, Holstein Kiel, St. Pauli, VfL Osnabrück, VfV Hildesheim, Hanover 96, Arminia Hanover, Bergedorf 85, VfB Oldenburg, Bremerhaven 93, SC Concordia, FC Altona 93, VfB Lübeck) and five newcomers from the amateur camp (SC Victoria Hamburg, VfL Wolfsburg, SV Friedrichsort, VfL Oldenburg, Barmbek-Uhlenhorst) together. The Northern League started on August 11, 1963. In front of 7,000 spectators, St. Paul defeated Altona 93 in the city derby with 4-1 goals. Hannover 96 prevailed with the new center forward Walter Rodekamp with 4-0 goals at Victoria Hamburg, while the local rival Arminia Hannover with his top-class offensive around Lothar Ulsaß , Gerhard Elfert and Helmut Kafka in the home game in front of 7,500 disappointed spectators against the newly promoted VfL Oldenburg did not get beyond a 0-0. After the 17th matchday, FC Altona 93 surprisingly held the top position with 27: 7 points, but Heiko Kurth's team ran out of steam in the second half of the season , because only 17:17 points destroyed all championship chances. St. Pauli, on the other hand, earned the championship with 26: 8 and 25: 9 points. Hannover 96 won the runner-up, while Lower Saxony lost the title with six away defeats, while St. Pauli and captain Ingo Porges only surrendered in three away matches. Arminia Hannover awarded with a home record of 24:10 points (home defeats against St. Pauli and Altona 93 and six draws) the entry into the Bundesliga promotion round. Local derbies shaped the round in the north. In Hamburg, St. Pauli, Altona, Victoria, Bergedorf, Barmbek and Concordia played against each other. City derbies also took place in Hanover (96 and Arminia), Kiel (Holstein and Friedrichsort) and Oldenburg (VfB and VfL). On the last match day, May 3, 1964, SV Friedrichsort held the class with a 2-1 home win against Bremerhaven 93 and Concordia Hamburg with a 1-1 draw at Arminia Hannover. The top scorer list was Horst Haecks (FC St. Pauli) with 36, Walter Rodekamp (Hannover 96) with 33 and Lothar Ulsaß (Arminia Hannover) with 30 goals. The players received contracts for the 1964/65 round for the Bundesliga:

In the starting round 1963/64, the Regionalliga Berlin consisted of seven clubs from the previous contract league Berlin (Tasmania Berlin, Tennis Borussia, Spandauer SV, Hertha Zehlendorf, Wacker 04, BFC Südring, Berliner SV 92) and three newcomers from the amateur camp (Blau- White 90, SC Union 06, Reinickendorfer Füchse) together. The Berlin champions of 1959, 1960 and 1962, Tasmania 1900, went into the round as the clear favorite, which started on August 18, 1963. The championship was carried out in three rounds of nine games each. After 27 match days, Tasmania and Tennis Borussia scored exactly 73:22 goals. “Tas” won the championship with 46: 8 to 42:12 points against “TeBe”. Amazingly, the "Veilchen" from the Mommsenstadion scored 4: 2 points in three direct duels against the champions and did not lose a game. The second defeat came for the champions from Sportpark Neukölln on January 12, 1964 with a 1: 2 home defeat against Wacker 04. Wolfgang Neumann only managed the connection goal to 1: 2 for the eventual champions in the 58th minute. Relegated to the amateur league was the bottom of the table SC Union 06 Berlin.

The following players were used in the first West Berlin regional league champions: Klaus Basikow (27), Hans-Jürgen Bäsler (25-2), Eckhardt Peschke (25), Heinz Fischer (25-24), Wolfgang Neumann (24-11), Klaus Konieczka (23-2), Hans-Günter Becker (22-1), Horst Talaszus (21), Wolfgang Rosenfeldt (21-9), Erich Reimer (21-13), Horst Greuel (17), Helmut Fiebach (17 -4), Erwin Bruske (14-7), Jürgen Linder (6), Wulf-Ingo Usbeck (6), Bernd Schwier (3), Bernd Brückner (1).

For the 1964/65 round, Michael Krampitz moved from Hertha Zehlendorf to the Bundesliga by signing a contract with Hertha BSC . The pairing Tasmania 1900 against Hertha Zehlendorf had the best audience response with 2,170 interested parties.

    Season course

In the west, Alemannia from Aachen (5th place in the Oberliga West 1962/63), not nominated for the Bundesliga despite athletic qualifications over the twelve-year ranking, was the clear championship favorite for the first regional league round in 1963/64. The Tivoli team of coach Oswald Pfau fully lived up to these requirements and already won the championship in the preliminary round with 31: 7 points. Since the pursuers Wuppertaler SV, Fortuna Düsseldorf and TSV Marl-Hüls did not help the slightly weaker second half of the season with 28:10 points. In the fall series, Alemannia only lost the two away games at Viktoria Köln (coach Hennes Weisweiler ) and at Sportfreunde Siegen (coach Herbert Schäfer ). In the second half of the season, the team around captain and striker Josef Martinelli lost to Marl-Hüls and RW Oberhausen (April 12 and 19, 1964) within a week, but with 13 wins they still held a reassuring advantage of seven points and thus made it into the Bundesliga promotion round moved in.

Coach Robert Gebhardt , however, surprisingly led the 15th of the 1963 Oberliga, Wuppertaler SV, to the runner-up. Inspired by the successes in the DFB Cup in 1963 - a 1-0 victory against Borussia Neunkirchen was achieved in the quarter-finals and the semi-final game on August 7th against Hamburger SV in front of 38,000 spectators in the stadium at the Zoo was only just lost with 0-1 goals - succeeded the Oberbergischen a start with 19: 3 points and they lost only after the 0: 1 defeat on October 20, 1963 at VfB Bottrop, the table lead to Aachen. Against the biggest rival for the runner-up, Fortuna Düsseldorf, achieved a clear 4-0 victory on April 19, 1964 in front of 40,000 spectators and thus a preliminary decision for second place.

TSV Marl-Hüls, 16th of the top division round 1962/63, scored only 56 hits, but reached fourth place in the final table. Even the teams from Horst-Emscher (56), Herten (55), Bottrop (53) and Siegen (69!) Who were fighting for relegation until the final day were able to act at eye level. The team around the outstanding midfielder Heinz van Haaren could build on the good defensive, which allowed only 41 goals against.

At the bottom of the table, the West German amateur champions of 1963, Lüner SV, had no chance. For TuS Duisburg 48/99, the fight to stay in the league ended prematurely. Siegen, Bottrop, Herten and Horst-Emscher, however, fought a bitter fight until the last matchday on May 10, 1964. Herten lost by a converted penalty in the 89th minute with 1: 2 goals at VfB Bottrop and thus the race for the Relegation against the tied STV Horst-Emscher. The "Emscher Hussars" stayed with the goal rate 0.75 to 0.70 against the game association in the class.

Before the start of the first year of the Regionalliga, a number of clubs lost valuable players in the summer of 1963: Bayer Leverkusen ( Heinz Höher , Uwe Klimaschefski , Manfred Manglitz ); Black and white food ( Theo Klöckner , Heinz Steinmann , Horst Trimhold , Manfred Rummel ); Viktoria Cologne ( Klaus Matischak , Carl-Heinz Rühl ); Westfalia Herne ( Otto Luttrop , Rudolf Pöggeler , Hans Tilkowski ); Sportfreunde Hamborn 07 ( Horst Podlasly , Werner Rinass , Rolf Schafstall ); Borussia Mönchengladbach ( Franz Brungs ); Rot-Weiss Essen ( Otto Rehhagel ); RW Oberhausen ( Willi Wrenger ), VfB Bottrop ( Diethelm Ferner ).

The top scorer list was headed by Josef Martinelli (Aachen; 33 goals), Peter Meyer (Düsseldorf; 30 goals), Ulrich Kohn (Mönchengladbach; 23 goals), Albert Kühn (Siegen; 21 goals) and the triumvirate Eckehard Feigenspan (RWE), Gerd Roggensack (Bielefeld) and Hans-Otto Peters (Leverkusen) with 20 hits each.

The following players got a contract in the Bundesliga for the round 1964/65:

In the first year of the Regionalliga Südwest, 1963/64, the new 20 team was recruited from the former upper division (Borussia Neunkirchen, FK Pirmasens, Wormatia Worms, Sportfreunde Saarbrücken, SC Ludwigshafen, Tura Ludwigshafen, SV Saar 05, TuS Neuendorf, VfR Frankenthal, Mainz 05, BSC Oppau, VfR Kaiserslautern, SV Niederlahnstein) and the promoters from the 2nd league southwest (Phönix Bellheim, ASV Landau, Phönix Ludwigshafen, Eintracht Trier, SV Völklingen, SV Weisenau, TSC Zweibrücken). With Neunkirchen, Pirmasens and Worms, the teams that were placed two to four in the top ranks in the last league year 1962/63 prevailed over the course of the round. On the starting day, August 4, 1963, the three championship competitors each won their home games 1-0. At Völklingen (1: 1 at Tura Ludwigshafen) the world champion from 1954, Horst Eckel , was still involved. Horst Nußbaum , Viktoria Köln's new addition to FK Pirmasens, only became famous in the musical entertainment industry in later years. The team of coach Horst Buhtz , Borussia Neunkirchen, lost only three games and had the best defense with the received 33 goals. With Helmut Kapitulski (31 goals), coach Alfred Preißler was the top scorer in the southwest and his attack ( Horst Brill , Hugo Dausmann , Heinz Hohmann , Helmut Kapitulski, Hilmar Weishaar , Heini Seebach ) scored 128 goals (against Völklingen and Bellheim: 9: 0; against Zweibrücken: 9: 1) also the most goals, but with six defeats FK Pirmasens had to make do with the runner-up. On April 19, 1964, in front of 12,500 spectators, Worms lost the home game against Neunkirchen with 0-1 goals and thus the championship lead to the team from the Ellenfeld stadium, as Pirmasens also surprisingly lost 4-1 at Sportfreunde Saarbrücken (two goals by Hennes Löhr) Lost goals on matchday 35. Since the three leaders of the table won their remaining games, nothing changed in the first places and the team of coach Radoslav Momirski , Wormatia Worms, landed on the ungrateful third place. The bottom of the league season 1962/63, SV Niederlahnstein, and the promoted ASV Landau were relegated to the amateur league. There were derbies in Ludwigshafen (Phönix, SC, Tura and BSC Oppau), in Mainz (05 and Weisenau) and Saarbrücken (Sportfreunde and SV Saar 05). The top scorer list was led by Kapitulski (31 goals), Löhr (30 goals) and Dieter Kraft (27 goals; Worms).

The SV Phönix Ludwigshafen and TuRa Ludwigshafen merge after the season to SV Südwest 1882 Ludwigshafen .

For the round 1964/65 switched to the Bundesliga:

    Season course

In the south, the clubs FC Bayern Munich and Kickers Offenbach, which were not included in the Bundesliga, were the clear favorites for the first two places. Surprisingly, the tenth of the top division season 1962/63, Hessen Kassel, won the championship in 1964 in the Regionalliga Süd in front of Munich and Offenbach. If you take the personnel situation to hand, the success of North Hesse is no longer that surprising. With Heinrich Dittel (Viktoria Aschaffenburg), Rolf Fritzsche (Hamburger SV) and Gerd Becker ( FV Breidenbach ) there were three newcomers, all of which were direct hits. Stopper Dittel stabilized the defense, Fritzsche directed the attack and the left winger stormed the young Becker in 36 games and scored 19 goals. Through these three gains, left runner Helmut Huttary developed , center forward Ernst Kuster scored 20 goals and half-left Klaus-Peter Jendrosch even won the top scorer in the south with 35 goals. The championship of the team of coach and qualified sports teacher Walter Müller was decisively initiated with the 30: 8 points from the preliminary round. Bayern Munich had to cope with the departures of the top performers Willi Giesemann (HSV) and Peter Grosser to local rivals 1860 Munich at the start. The new coach Zlatko Čajkovski tried to compensate for this with the newcomers Dieter Koulmann (SC Schwenningen) and Werner Ipta (FC Schalke 04). On the Bieberer Berg , the disappointment about the non-nomination for the Bundesliga was still so present that the realistic analysis of seventh place in the 1962/63 round was omitted (some players from the successful Oberliga era had passed their zenith) and important decisions were made for the future ( The position of the coach should have been measured against the profile of Paul Oßwald , who had developed talent after talent in Offenbach). National striker Engelbert Kraus moved to Munich in 1860 and Sigfried Held and Georg Tripp were supposed to provide new momentum in the Kickers attack. After the 8th matchday, Offenbach led the table with 14: 2 points ahead of Kassel and Munich with 12: 4 points each. After the preliminary round, the OFC was in fourth place with 25:13 points. The two defeats against the later relegated BC Augsburg and Borussia Fulda had a particularly negative impact. In the second half of the season Kassel, Munich and Offenbach each got 25:13 points and thus the places for the promotion round were taken: Hessen Kassel and Bayern Munich took part, Kickers Offenbach ( Hermann Nuber , Siegfried Gast ), Swabian Augsburg ( Kurt Haseneder ) and SSV Reutlingen (coach Georg Wurzer ) had to be content with ranks three to five.

The SpVgg Neu-Isenburg ended on December 15, 1963 with a 1-1 draw against "Herbstmeister" Hessen Kassel the preliminary round. With 17:21 points, the team with the talent Peter Dietrich was in twelfth place. With 10:28 points, the team from Offenbach was last in the second half of the season and thus rose together with Fulda (goalkeeper Theo Diegelmann ; amateur national striker Hans-Jürgen Himmelmann ; center forward Bernd Windhausen ), BC Augsburg (with returning Ulrich Biesinger ) and Amicitia Viernheim (picked up only eleven points in the first and second half of the season).

The top scorer list was Klaus-Peter Jendrosch (Hessen Kassel) with 35 goals, Rainer Ohlhauser (Bayern Munich) with 33 goals and Rudolf Bast (VfR Mannheim) with 22 goals.

For the round 1964/65 the following players switched to the Bundesliga:

    Group 1

The southern vice FC Bayern Munich opened the promotion round on June 6, 1964 with an easily played 4-0 away win at northern champions FC St. Pauli. Since at the same time the secret favorite Borussia Neunkirchen lost with 1: 5 goals against the not so strongly rated Berlin champions Tasmania 1900 (three goals by center forward Heinz Fischer ), everything seemed to point to the rise of the team of coach Zlatko Čajkovski . After Munich's 1-0 away win on matchday three at Neunkirchen's Ellenfeld Stadium - FC Bayern was at the top of the table with 5-1 points - everything seemed to be over. However, the team of coach Horst Buhtz , Borussia Neunkirchen, turned the tables in the second leg immediately following in Munich and won 2-0 goals. Goalkeeper Willi Ertz had a great day and was able to keep his case clean against the goal scorers Rainer Ohlhauser and Dieter Brenninger . The decisive factor for Bayern was the 3-0 defeat at Tasmania 1900, as Neunkirchen was able to prevail with a goal from Karl Ringel in the 85th minute with a 1-0 win at St. Pauli and thus on the final day could do it on their own. Borussia succeeded in doing this with a 1-0 win against Tasmania with a goal by Elmar May in front of 38,000 spectators.

The Borussia Neunkirchen players used: Willi Ertz , Horst Kirsch , Günter Schröder , Erwin Glod , Hans Schreier , Achim Melcher , Erich Leist , Dieter Schock , Elmar May , Paul Pidancet , Heinz Simmet , Horst Berg , Karl Ringel , Günter Kuntz , Volker Coin .

It is worth mentioning the use of goalkeeper Fritz Kosar as right winger at the Bayern game on June 24 at Tasmania Berlin and that Franz Beckenbauer opened his career in the senior sector with the game on June 6 at St. Pauli.

  • Group 2

The West Champion Alemannia Aachen was the clear favorite in Group 2. Although the FK Pirmasens surprisingly eliminated the Wuppertaler SV in the qualifying games, the Pirmasens were given little chance of success against the Tivoli team. Alemannia's 3-0 defeat in the stadium on Zweibrücker Strasse in Pirmasens was the bang on the first day of the match. Despite the leading players Branko Zebec , Christian Breuer and Josef Martinelli , Aachen started with a defeat. The Nordvize Hannover 96 decided the game in Kassel with two goals within 60 seconds by Werner Gräber in the 77th and 78th minute of the game. Since Aachen also lost the second game with 0-2 against Kassel and center forward Walter Rodekamp with two goals in front of 55,000 spectators in the Lower Saxony stadium Pirmasens in the place, the team of coach Helmut Kronsbein had created a good starting position. On the third match day, Aachen was finally out of the promotion race after the 1: 2 defeat at Hannover. The 3-2 home win in the second leg on June 20 didn't change that. Hannover prevailed with 4-0 goals in Pirmasens and made the promotion on June 28th with a 3-1 win against Kassel in front of 70,000 spectators.

The players from Hannover 96 used:

Horst Podlasly , Heinz Steinwedel , Klaus Bohnsack , Winfried Mittrowski , Otto Laszig , Bodo Fuchs , Fred Heiser , Werner Gräber , Walter Rodekamp , Udo Nix , Georg Kellermann , Manfred Fahrtmann .
