Belgian Grand Prix (motorcycle)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Belgian Grand Prix for motorcycles was a motorcycle race that was held a total of 62 times between 1921 and 1990 and was part of the motorcycle world championship between 1949 and 1990 .

history

The Belgian Grand Prix was one of the oldest and most prestigious Grand Prix races in motorcycle racing. The first event took place in 1921 on the originally 14.863 km long route from Spa-Francorchamps , which largely consisted of otherwise public country roads in the triangle between the villages of Francorchamps in the north, Malmedy in the south-east and Stavelot in the south-west. The Grand Prix quickly gained importance and as early as 1923, international greats, Wal Handley and Freddie Dixon, entered the winners' lists.

In 1926 , the races were held for the first time as the FICM Grand Prix , at which the European champions of the season were chosen every year . In 1930 the Belgian Grand Prix was decisive for the European title for a second time. In 1936 the race did not take place in Spa, but on the Circuit de Floreffe near Floreffe . Even when the European champions were determined in several races for the first time in 1938 and 1939 , the races were part of the European Championship.

After the Second World War , racing activities were resumed in 1947. In 1949 , the Belgian Grand Prix was part of the first ever motorcycle world championship . In 1979 the races took place for the first time on the considerably shorter Grand Prix circuit, which only consists of parts of the old track. However, they were boycotted by many of the top pilots of the time because the new asphalt was far too slippery. In the following season , for the second time in its history, the Grand Prix was not held in Spa and instead moved to Zolder . In 1987 , for the first time since the Second World War, there was no Belgian Grand Prix because the race was canceled due to the failure of the FIM to improve security measures .

The last Belgian Grand Prix was held in the 1990 season. Then came the end of the race, which, with the exception of 1987, was one of the few that has always been part of the motorcycle world championship that has been held since 1949.
