The first name Hermann (with its spelling variants, especially Herrmann ) was the most frequently given boy's name in Germany in 1891 and was one of the ten most frequently given names until the 1910s. Its popularity then declined slowly at first, and more sharply from the mid-1940s. In the mid-1960s, the name's popularity collapsed again, and it has barely been used since the 1980s.
