Hess or Hess is a German family name .

Origin, meaning and distribution

Hess is a variation of the name Hessi that can be traced for the first time around 1394 and indicates the origin of the Hessian tribe . It is one of the most common German names of origin . Other variations are Hasso (around 860), Hesso (around 1180), and Hesse (around 1401). Since these variants were used as first names, there is hardly any connection of origin to Hesse for all tribes. The name is most common in southwest Germany. Hess is also a common Jewish surname.
